BOSS Issue

Recommended Posts

My issue/solution as put on the BOSS readme:

"Won't Change load order and generating a blank text file: OS is Windows 7:

Give group or users name: BATCH controls of the Oblivion folder"

My question is - how exactly do I this? I just don't understand what it is telling me to do.

I would be grateful for any and all help,

- cf.

If you have the game installed to the default folder, Program Files (x86), you can avoid a lot of UAC headaches by reinstalling the game to a custom folder (i.e., C:\Games.) I do not use Win7, but you might be able to find the administrative settings in the folder's properties. If you right-click on the Oblivion install folder, see if you can find it among one of those tabs.

Hello, and thank you for replying!

I turned the UAC off, but since I installed in Program Files (x86), maybe the UAC is still affecting it? Or maybe

it is because I haven't done the weird "Give group or users name: BATCH controls of the Oblivion folder"

I am just afraid if I uninstall it all my mods will disappear. I have already invested hours into this, and I don't

want it to go to waste. :(

If I could get BOSS to work it would be amazing, but if I can't, I will just make myself learn how to order

my mods by hand.

I would not turn off the UAC because it really does provide protection for your system. If it is off, then the location of the install folder for Oblivion does not matter. However, you can certainly reinstall it without loosing all of your mods. After reinstalling, you can copy the contents of your old Data folder in the new one. I would not copy the original BSAs or the Shaders folder, however. There should be some administrative window somewhere where you can set that rule. I thought I saw a screenie with a properties tab that looked relevant, but I'm not sure...

Find the BOSS.bat file in your Data directory, right-click on it, and select "Run As Administrator". You might need to do the same thing for the BOSS.exe as well. (I can't remember if I did both or not.)

Thanks! I just turned it back on fast as lightning once I read your post!

BSAs? Shaders?

...I think uninstalling and reinstalling would be a bit to complicated for me.

I might as well leave it as it is, but thank you for the input. :)

@ Shadowfen

I tried that for both of the .bat and .exe files, and the same thing happened -

the blank notepad popped up and none of my mods were moved. :( Thanks

for suggesting it anyways. :)

You need to move your oblivion game if you intend on installing new mods to it, or running any of the tools like BOSS, the Construction Set, Wrye Bash, or OBMM[ or if you run certain kinds of mods such as Streamline or Kyoma's Journal that want to read or write to ini files there.. None of them will work properly if you have UAC turned on and oblivion installed under Program Files (x86) and you will have hosts of confusing and frustrating symptoms when you try to make it work.

The "Run As Administrator" is an additional requirement for BOSS after you have turned off UAC if you are installed in the Program Files (x86) directory. It won't work alone as you have found. If oblivion is installed someplace else, you don't have to turn off UAC just to make things work!
