Nightwolfhunter
Thanks for the continued responces. To answer the question Steel asked, I am running Windows 7, 64 bit if that makes any difference. I just installed it to what it recommended, which is a games folder. It is Libraries> Documents>my Games> Oblivion.

I just installed it to what it recommended, which is a games folder. It is Libraries> Documents>my Games> Oblivion. What did you install there? Don't install Oblivion itself there. That's as good as installing it to the default folder because Documents is a default Windows folder. Reinstall the game to C:\Games.

So I need to uninstall and reinstall my game to a new file entirely? Why is that? EDIT: I did so. It is now under C:\Games. EDIT 2: do I need to go back and reinstall my patches since I uninstalled and reinstalled the game?
steelstiletto
The reason that you do this is because Windows Vista and 7 have some added protection in the default folders (such as Documents or Program Files) that limit your ability to add to them or change what's in them. Even as an administrator, extra hoops have to be jumped through in order to run some mod tool correctly, and so it is just easier to have everything outside of those system folders from the beginning. I uninstalled then reinstalled oblivion from and to my system. do I need to redownload the official and unofficial patches?2. looking at the links given to me by the other user, it says to back up the data files. Do I NOT want ot back up the other things as well?
Gam0rdude
ah, welcome to the good life. if you're looking for mods look at recommended oblivion mod videos on youtube. i would recommend that akatosh dragon mount mod, plus midas magic. just search them on the nexus, and have fun! as for mods like franescos, martigens, or oscuro, or warcry, dont use those unless you're at least an experienced modder. Do I NOT want ot back up the other things as well? 1. After you reinstalled, any patches that you already applied are gone until you apply them again, so yeah, re-doing them is a good idea. You don't need to redownload them if you have them in your download folder still, but you will need to reinstall them. 2. They recommend backing up your data folder because any mods you add will go in that folder. So, later down the road, if you decide you want to remove all your mods and go back to a vanilla install again, you can just replace your data folder with the backup that you made and everything would be back to normal again. You might do this in case you get a mod (or two (or three)) that doesn't work and screws up everything, but you can't uninstall it correctly. The reason you don't need to back up everything is that outside of the data folder, almost nothing gets changed by mods. The only thing I can think of is when you install OBSE which adds some dll files to the base oblivion folder. So you don't need a backup of content that doesn't change, just the data folder where things can go really crazy really fast.
Nightwolfhunter
Thanks. I think I'll play it safe and just keep a backup of EVERYTHING. This is the only game I wil play on this for a while.
