Dullahan Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 Hey, say for example, you do some great deed, like rid a town from a crooked Guard Captian, you would expect that people would notice it was YOU who did it, right? Everytime i hear about something i did, they say "Did you hear someone finally set that guard straight', or 'Did you hear that someone played yet another trick on Jeanne? Honestly, i don;t know how she keeps falling for these things" Will they ever recognize it was MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE who did this??
Rhydderch Hael Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 21st-century computing technology. More techno-thingamajigs and multi-threading doohickeys than you can shake a stick at. And they couldn't do a simple gender/race/name check and apply it to text-borne messages. That's what I thought when I read a copy of the Black Horse Courier lauding the exploits of an "unnamed hero" saving somebody's life. News flash, Bethesda: your here program records and accounts for the character's race, gender, and their name. Is it impossible to apply some scripting in the Courier's text fields? Something to the effect of "...thanks to the efforts of [[Name]], a [[Race]] [[Class]] who saved the little children from the burning orphanage. [[He/She Gender Check]] raced out of the flames with little Timmy in [[His/Her Gender Check]] arms..." Hell's bells, we can name potions. Why can't our name show up in printed newsletters?
KzinistZerg Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 Well... Actually, there's only one problem. He/she is ok. BUT: Say your name is... oh... Elena. Is it pronounced... ee-lee-nay?eh-lay-nuh?Is the e silent? Is it el-in-uh?E-luh-nay? Same thing for your class... Now, at char-gen they could have a part that asks you exactly how to pronounce your name (it'd play it back for you for check) and class if it's a custom class. But they didn't.
ReinKruze Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 zerg has a good point, but it still would be pretty cool if we were recognized a little more 8)
cactoblasta Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 I think the audio would be the biggest problem there. The rumours are all voiced. And as they are voiced the player's name can't be included without the immersion-breaking use of a voice synthesiser. Also it would be very strange to ask someone about a rumour only for them to speak about you, including name and everything, right to your face. As for newspapers you'd think that would be possible, but no one apart from the Emperor ever actually asks your name, so how would they know it? It's not like you wear a big badge or name-tag (unless you're using a particularly strange mod).

Povuholo Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 As for newspapers you'd think that would be possible, but no one apart from the Emperor ever actually asks your name, so how would they know it? It's not like you wear a big badge or name-tag (unless you're using a particularly strange mod). Well you also know the name of every npc without talking to them. Maybe floating letters appear somewhere too when they look at you. And when you click on someone to talk to him/her you say something to that npc. Or do you point your finger at everyone you want to talk to and then shout "RUMORS"?And when he/she is telling his/her name, wouldn't you do the same? The closest we got to names called now was the arena grand champion nick name...
Rhydderch Hael Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 Sound files are one thing. But what about text-only stuff like the newspapers?
Rhydderch Hael Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 ... but no one apart from the Emperor ever actually asks your name, so how would they know it? It's not like you wear a big badge or name-tag (unless you're using a particularly strange mod)."All hail Arch-Mage Anonymous, Master of the Fighter's Guild and the Hero of Kvatch, of whom we know not a thing, not even your name." Oh, no. I thought I cleaned off the Cowl before I donned it.
Dullahan Posted June 23, 2006 Author Posted June 23, 2006 Gods.. then why not this: They see you on the street, and instead of saying 'there's a bounce to your step' or something, they cculd say, something like 'We heard YOU set the guard straight' or 'Why did YOU have to play a prank on Jeanne?' or 'thank YOU so much for ridding us of ManniMarco, Arch-Mage'. If crappier games like Fable could do that, then Oblivion by far, has teh capabilities. ... but no one apart from the Emperor ever actually asks your name, so how would they know it? It's not like you wear a big badge or name-tag (unless you're using a particularly strange mod)."All hail Arch-Mage Anonymous, Master of the Fighter's Guild and the Hero of Kvatch, of whom we know not a thing, not even your name." Oh, no. I thought I cleaned off the Cowl before I donned it. Lol.. That reminds me. When i go to guilds as an Arch-Mage, they could at least say 'Ah, you have finally reached the top, congratulations..' Lol.. the Argonian's voices rock.. esp. teh females.. I really like Deetsan and Kud-Ei's a lot, esp. Ocheeva. If my character wasn't a mute, i would be an argonian :P
