Not only is it absolutely FREE, 7-zip is conveniently located right here on TesNexus: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15579

Winrar is also an excellent extractor, however it is not free but comes in a try before you buy edition.

Either one will easily extract the other one's files as well as many others. You can pick the one you like or use both as they do not interfere as long as you set up the proper file associations for each.

Don't you need a full version of WinRAR to extract 7-zip files. I have had a version that did not allow me to extract them. One of my systems has the full version on it, and does offer that functionality. I can't remember which or why I had it though...

@TomLong: I use 7-zip so I can't say for sure, but I have never heard that the winrar shareware version would not extract 7z files before.

You may have to set it in the Windows file associations first.

Here is an old article I did on associating in XP - Vista and Win7 will be slightly different

How to associate file types for 7-zip

This is a windows process, and as I use XP, my instructions will be for XP. If you use Vista they should be similar. If you find something you don't understand, let me know.

Go to the lower left corner of your Windows Desktop screen and click on the green Start

On the list that pops up find settings, as you move you mouse over it, another list should appear to the right. find and click on Control Panel

A new window will pop up. At the top, just below the blue bar, find and click on tools. A window should drop down, the last item on the list should be 'Folder Options'

Again just under the blue bar, click on 'File Types'

Scroll down to find 7z - click on it - it should turn blue.

Look below for 'Details for 7z Extension and click on the change box

If 7-zip is installed, it should show under the recommended file types. click on it to set it as the program to open 7z type files. Then look below, find the check box with the label Always use the selected program to open this kind of file. click on the box - there should be green check mark in the box.

If you want 7-Zip to also open for Winrar and winzip, (Recommended) scroll down the list, find them and change them just like you did for 7z. winzip files will be .zip, winrar filew will be .rar

Now go to the bottom of the window and click on the OK box.

Now any file that is compressed with z-zip will automatically run the 7-zip program to allow you to unzip the files.

I did not go through all that to associate 7-zip files. I use XP. I have no clue how the process work on Vista or Win7, since I have not installed an archive utility on either of those operating systems. I leave all of the archive utilities to their default, and I almost always use the 7-zip submenu of the context menu when extracting archives. Installing and using the utility has not ever posed a problem for me. After restarting the computer, the associations were set accordingly. Isn't part of the point of the restart to set the file associations... It has been a while since I installed 7-zip I guess...

@TomLong: Yes, it is supposed to set them automatically. However, If you miss the instruction to 'associate all' it can not have them associated even if 7-zip is installed. Also,if you install another unzipping program after 7-zip, some (or all) of the associations may be changed.

I always use 7-zip also and it has been able to handle anything I have thrown at it. Including rar, zip, tgz and anything else
