Recommendations for a new mod user

I finished FO3 and the 4 DLCs (Zeta, tho paid for and dl'd, has not appeared to work on my PC system). I'm genuinely sorry to see it end, though I am still wandering through the Wasteland doing simple exploring. I held off using mods during the main game play as I was concerned about issues of play balance and such (and, truthfully, was enjoying the game so much I didn't want to take the time to learn about installing mods). Now, however, I'd like to try out the mods. I am primarily interested in questing and exploring and would like to hear the recommendations of other users. I do have a secondary interest in the game's ambiance (sounds, visualizations, modifications of equipment, and so on) but not at the cost of messing with making the game too easy (no god mods or uber-weapons attract me). So where, based on your own experience, do you think I should begin? What have you added to the game that has made it better (however you define that word)?

Thanks for any input.

I like to shamelessly promote my own DLC-like mod. The link is below this text in my sig. You can also go to the nexus and search there under "Quests and Adventures" to find other similar mods. I leave the "popular" mods up to others to describe.

To make the vanilla game more interesting in general, I would start of by using one of the mods that completely revamp the combat/item system. I'd recommend Fallout Wanderer's Edition (FWE): It adds a lot of classic Fallout 1/2 weapons, has a whole lot of settings regarding combat, damage, armour, survival needs, etc.

To complement FWE, I'd suggest using WMK (Weapon Mod Kits), MMM (Mart's Mutant Mod), and EVE (Energy Visuals Enhanced.) WMK does exactly what it sounds like, MMM adds new creatures to the wasteland and ehances the function of the monsters that already exist. EVE also pretty much does what it says; makes the game's energy visuals look better. Its not necessary, and it is a bit of a drain on the system, but EVE is an interesting addition if your system can handle it. Most of the mods mentioned above need FOSE, so you'll want to get that too. And to make them all work together, you'll have to refer to FOIP.

If you're interested in ambience, try using Fellout, Enhanced Weather, and Wasteland Moods.

As far as questing is concerned, I'm not really sure. I don't download too many quest mods because I spend most of my time wandering around the wasteland. With the mods mentioned above, it can take a long, LONG time to finish just 1 quest. Not in a boring way, either. But if you look at Files of the Month on the main nexus site, a fair few of them are additional quests mods.

Hope this helps...

Thank you both. I'll give these ideas a try and let you know how it goes.

My initial reaction to looking at the UC concept is quite positive - as an old game beta tester (back to 360 Pacific's Harpoon and V For Victory) and technical adviser (I provided a psych model for Close Combat), I appreciate how difficult it is to construct even a simple quest/game. So I am really looking forward to descending into UC to see how your effort has fared.

As I'm dl'd the suggested enhancements, I am impressed with the range of changes modders have been able to accomplish in FO3. I look forward to being dazzled.

Thanks again,
