Run Oblivion on Win 7 with XP dual boot??

Hi all. Im sorry if this is an old topic. If it is, delete this topic and please direct me to the proper channel.

So, I have an interesting predicament:

I got Win 7 (premium) installed as my main OS and I can dual boot with Win XP Pro. Everything is fine and dandy when I play Oblivion on XP, but when I try to play it on Win 7 I get a crash when Im loading up a save game or new game.

I noticed that in my oblivion folder that has the saved games and settings, Win 7 and Xp share those files. So if I delete a file in the XP folder it will also delete it in the Win 7 partition. So, Im making a weak assumption that all my settings will only run under XP when using Win 7.

I've been googling and some say its a directx11 problem. Some say to delete your .ini files and start fresh, run your .exe's as administrator, etc.

I did all that but still no luck.

could it be the directX11 problem? Also, I purposefully installed Oblivion on a separate partition in Xp because i knew that my oblivion folder would be honkin 50GB! With that being said, changing the registry in regedit wouldn't do me any good since my data files (mods, meshes, etc) are not on my C: drive.

So is there something Im missing? I dont want to reinstall everything from scratch and move my 50GB data folder to my Win7 (or XP) partition.

YI do not think you can share the files. In Win7, regenerate the Oblivion.ini - http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=know_how_to#RegenerateTheOblivion.ini

Also, make sure the game is installed outside of the default folder, Program Files (x86) on Win7.

Edit: DX11 does not matter, but make sure you have DX9.0c installed - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

Are you running a true dual boot - 2 separate and independent operating systems - each in it's own partition, and having to select which one you want on boot. OR running XP as a virtual OS from inside of Win7 - boot Win7 then open XP?

If it is the true dual boot, it should have separate file structures and separate registries.

If your XP is virtual, I can see that it may share the registry with the Win7. (not sure about this)

From your description it looks like you are trying to run the same oblivion using 2 operating systems. I can see where this would confuse Oblivion or the OS. Any changes made using one OS may not be recognized by the other.

Oblivion does not allow multiple copies on the same system. This is because of the way Oblivion makes entries in the registry when it is installed. I have developed a work around that allows 2 copies to share the same registry entries, in effect allowing 2 (or more) Oblivions to co exist on a system. I'm not sure if it would apply in your case or not.
