ell46
Sorry to post about something that is already being discussed, but it didn't seem right to hijack the other thread. I've spent the day copying files ready for my new PC to be built, thinking that it would be a simple case of replacing the new empty Bioware folders with my copies or copying the files from my back ups to the new folders. Have I read and understood everything correctly that I can't do this?

These are the folder(s) found under YOUR user profile. The one usually called "My Documents", (although with Win7, the pathname is actually "C:\Users\[username]\Documents".) Two caveats: 1. Any DLC will be "Unauthrorized" until you log-in to the EA servers and re-validate the Downladable Content. Depending on network load, could be a minute or more to complete. 2. This is NOT the way you install the game. That path is "C:\Program Files\Dragon Age", (or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Dragon Age", for a 64-bit OS.) You can't just "copy-paste" the actual program stuff, but have to go through the full installation process (retail disc, or Steam.) An exception to this general rule is if you're using one of the many "migrate my PC" utilities, (including MS's own built-in one.) But if that were the case, you probably wouldn't be posting the question here... ) Good Luck with your new machine!
ell46
Sorry I obviously didn't word my earlier post very well. I've copied the mod files from My Documents\Bioware\Dragon Age\ etc Override folder and also the folder called Characters (saved games). The plan is/was once I've reinstalled the game on the new PC and re downloaded my DLC from EA to copy these files to the new My Documents\Bioware\Dragon Age etc folder, does that make more sense  Can I do this and will the saves and overrides work with the new install? Thandal
Yes, it makes sense, and yes it should work just fine. Remember, DLC will be in the "addins" folder under your profile, as will dazips if you're not using a 3rd-party Mod Manager. The one issue I've had in all my un-/re-installs was getting DAO-Mod Manager to work afterwards. The first time I tried it after doing a copy-paste" back into my profile, the shortcut reported "file not found". So I re-ran the .rar and extracted it right back over itself. Since this re-created the "overrides" and "dazip" sub-folders under the "mods" folder (under the "[user''s documents]\bioware\dragon age\packages\core\override" folder. Sheeesh that's a looooong path!) for its own use, I had to replace the contents of those as well from the "copied set". But another user has reported no such problem, so maybe it was just a one-time hiccough...
ell46
Thanks, I was dreading having to list everything that was in the folder. My copy of DAMManager is a bit in limbo at the moment as I was having a problem with 3-4 mods that I knew weren't conflicting but it flagged that they were, so in a fit of peak, I stopped using it and removed everything from it, then after a while I decided to use it again but not for the mods it didn't seem to like. Right I'm off to my sons now to try my external HD on his machine to make sure it works on a different PC and to have a look at this new whizzy Win7  that he raves about, but it's a bit late really as we bought a copy when we ordered all the parts for the new PC. I'm dreading this in case I forget to copy something I might need.
Thandal
Just copy the entire "[user's documents]\bioware\dragon age" folder and you'll have what you need. The most important parts are what you paid for (your DLC, which you should be able to get from the EA servers no matter if the copied versions don't work) and your characters/saves. If something isn't quite work correctly afterwards, (a mod or two not behaving) you can always download that again from Nexus!
ell46
I hadn't planned on copying the DLC from EA as far as I know they won't work so aren't worth copying, it's simple enough to download them again once the game is installed, but I will make an extra copy of the whole folder to be on the safe side. I always wondered where the the DLC went to when it was downloaded now I know, thank you.
