Welcome, Zan!

Start here: http://www.dragonagenexus.com , and select "Top 100" from the links on the right side. That'll take you to a page that lists the current "Top 25" of the past two weeks, with additional links near the top for more groupings. But the "Top 25" is a fairly decent look at the types of things on-offer.

At that point, use the site's "Categories" search (again on the right side of the page) and start gettting a feel for what's in each. It's really more up to you. Do you want enhancements to items, (Weapons, Armour, etc.) or faces? Changes to the way the games works, or the way it looks? Fixes for bugs, or for personal annoyances (and yes, there's a mod named that! ;D )

The Endorsement/Feedback mechanism here is fairly reliable in that mods with LOTS of "Thumbs-ups" really do work, and work well. And the descriptions and comments sections associated with each mod give a ton of detail, so you pretty much "know what you're getting" before you even download.

If an author hasn't bothered to provide that kind of info with the submission, it probably isn't worth the trouble. There are lots of other ones here who's creators take real pride in their work!

Many of us like and use "DAO Mod Manager" (I get confused. Is that "DAMM", or is that the other one? Anyway, it's what I use! ) to corral (some of) our stable of mods, but that's just a housekeeping thing. Not needed to employ and enjoy any of the great mods that are out there!

[Edited to provide a link to a more specific answer to the question]

You'll find a couple of lists of which mods a few of us are using here:

Thandal- DA Modder is DAM and DA ModManager is DAMM. (Count the M's to keep track of um ;) )

One of them that I will Not play without, is Whiter Teeth. http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=44

I also like Polygamey to remove the 1 romance at a time restriction. http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=259 However, if its your first playthrough, you'll be denying yourself some of the play, and cutscenes that come from their jealousy at being juggled.

I also love DA Mutator. http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=166 which is a standalone program that has several different mods packed into it. You can pick and choose which ones you want to have active by checking or unchecking them from the list. NOT having to have a rogue in the party to unlock chests makes this mod golden IMO.

ALSO- One VERY BIG word of advice. Many mods that add items such as weapons, armor, and other gear dont load correctly on new characters made after the 1st one. Its an issue with the scripts that tell the game to load the items to the player, and how the game handles those scripts.

To get around this problem, you need to DISABLE all of these mods when you create a new character. Start the toon in the game til you can make a save for them. And then close the game down and then reactivate the mods. It may seem like a bit of a hassle, but it's a lot LESS of a hassle than trying to get them to show up if you DON'T do this. ;)

AND- if you are wanting to add mods that add new hairs, eyes, tattoos, and stuff like that you will have a problem. Those mods all use a file called chargemorphcfg.xml to list the new additions. The game will only read ONE of those files, so in order for them to all work together you need to use a chargencompiler- http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=971

Now, see... different players, different tastes. I won't load that one because I hate how Hollywood it makes everyone's mouth look. It's the one thing that bugs me about the Leli SA facemorph I'm using too.

Agree! Both with the value of the mod (one of my favs) and the value of waiting until after the first playthrough before using it!

Or, you can keep it simple. While I do always have a Rogue (usually my PC!) there's the stand-alone "Lock Bash" mod for those who don't: http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=301

Don't get too afraid of using these kinds of mods though. DW is totally correct that the program will only read one (at a time), but unless you have more than one making changes to the same class of elements, they can co-exist nicely. I use "PineappleTree's Vibrant Colors", http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=153, for eyes and skin, and "More Hairstyles", http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=392 (for the obvious.) :P

Again, "Have Fun!"
