Persisting CRC Error On Install

First of all, I'm gonna say that I have installed and played Oblivion more than 10 times over the years. It seems as if I have a new problem every time I reinstall.

 

I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything by the book. I did a complete uninstall, tried copying the game disk to my desktop... and hell, I even tried created an ISO, mounting it with Daemon tools, and installing that way. I have tried everything.

 

Right at the very end of the install, I get a "CRC Error" saying that "Oblivion.esm doesn't match the file in data1.cab" or something along those lines [not exactly that]. It gives me the option to Abort, Ignore, or Retry. I chose to retry several times. The error persisted. I chose to ignore it, the install completed, but Oblivion crashed on creating a new game and/or loading an old save.

 

I have done this several times today. I even tried in Safe Mode. The error persists.

 

Notes:

 

-The game is completely scratchless. It's in perfect condition. I take very good care of my games.

-I tried installing the game on my laptop and the install completed without any sort of issue. [Note: I've never installed it on that laptop. It must be a problem with this computer.]

-I have followed every uninstall and install guide available. I've looked up this error everywhere and tried every solution I could find.

 

What could I possibly be doing wrong here? As you can imagine, this is incredibly frustrating and discouraging.

 

I'll be willing to try anything that could potentially fix this problem.

Have you tried this reinstall procedure? It includes cleaning the old references out of the registry which most others don't. The uninstall part gets rid of everything, making it as if Oblivion had never been installed on that computer - if you follow the procedure exactly.

 

If you use a RAID system that mirrors your file structure you may have to disable it while doing this to keep it from trying to auto recover what you remove.

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.

 

A CRC error (Cyclic Redundancy Check) Catches data errors when it does not match some calculated number that was calculated when the file was originally installed. So what it is telling you is there is some file already on your computer with that name - probably pointed to by the entry in the registry - and it doesn't match the one you are trying to install. This could be because the old one was patched to the latest version, and the one on your disk isn't.

 

Do a search for any file no matter where it is located with the name "Oblivion.esm" (BTW, WIN7 file search sux big time. It can't find anything so you may have to manually search to find it.) If you find another one, try renaming it to something like Oblivion-esm.old.

 

Look in the obvious places first , C:\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion and C:\Games\Oblivion or wherever your game was originally installed.

Hey, thanks for the speedy response.

 

I've followed a similar guide and removed every trace of Oblivion on my computer. I checked through yours to make sure I wasn't forgetting a step. I've already done this 4 or 5 times today. No luck. And there is no oblivion.esm anywhere on my computer. The error persists.

CRC error could possibly mean you have a dirty or corrupt disc, so try cleaning it off (and hope it is not corrupt.)

Already cleaned it off every time I tried to use it. And I've never had problems with it before. Not a single scratch on the disk. Last time I used it, everything was fine. Moved it straight to the box when I was done. [i use a no-cd patch. It's way too much of a pain to keep the disk in the drive. And it gets easily damaged that way. So there is little to no wear on this disc at all]

 

I seriously doubt it's a problem with the disc. I've barely ever used the thing.

I mean, I always get some stupid ass error when installing Oblivion. It's a different error every time it seems. I eventually figure out what was wrong and fix it. I feel like I've gotten this error before. It must've been a year or two ago. I can't remember how I fixed it.

 

Any other suggestions, guys?

In that case, it could be a developing problem with your dvd drive. Do you have a friend who could loan you a usb dvd drive for you to test with? If it will load with the borrowed drive, then it is definitely a dvd drive (hardware) problem.

In that case, it could be a developing problem with your dvd drive. Do you have a friend who could loan you a usb dvd drive for you to test with? If it will load with the borrowed drive, then it is definitely a dvd drive (hardware) problem.

If that is the case, maybe uninstalling the device drivers through Device Manager and letting the system reinstall it after a reboot may help. Reinstalling burning software may help for those types of issues as well. Hopefully, the drive, itself, is okay.
