Age old question about vanilla spawns.

  1. 1. What bothers you the most about Vanilla spawns?

    • Things don't appear until a certain level, meanwhile weaker things can't be found after a certain point.
    • Things get stronger with you instead of starting off strong or having a limit to how strong they get.
    • Hard stuff should be rare and weak stuff should be common; but at high levels you see strong stuff everywhere.
    • There's no variety in creature strength, an Imp will always take exactly 5 hits with a weapon. Real things aren't always the exact same strength as everything of the same type.
    • It's too random, if I want a challenge I shouldn't have to wander around blindly for one.
    • It's not random enough, a ruin infested with undead should have all varieties of undead, not just those within my level range.
    • Nothing, I like the way vanilla spawns are setup.

  2. 2. What bothers you the most about Vanilla equipment distribution?

    • The shops don't carry the good stuff... Seriously, what the heck?
    • Bandits and Raiders are wearing better than you can get from merchants and epic encounters.
    • There's no variety in equipment. All steel armor is the same strength, and all dwarven armor is better than steel. The progression is too linear.
    • Rare material equipment isn't rare at all once you get past a certain level. In Morrowind there was only 1 set of Ebony, and you had to search high and low to piece it together.
    • Magic stuff needs to be more common to make exploring more interesting, and more useful to compare with equipment of higher materials.
    • I hate how I have to be a certain level to find anything good. If I want to risk my life beating up vampires at level 1, I better get something better than iron equipment from it.
    • I don't use vanilla equipment, it's just too boring and doesn't have any advantages compared to custom stuff.

  3. 3. What is your opinion of current overhaul mods. (OOO, Frans, MMM, ect)

    • They are necessary to make the game playable.
    • They are too bloated since they add so many other things beyond just fixing what is wrong.
    • They are too hard to install and require large downloads to make them work.
    • They are good, and add much needed visual variety to loots and encounters.
    • They are bad and only offer more difficulty or variety in certain locations.

    • I don't use them since none of them have what I'm looking for in an overhaul.
    • I have no opinion since I've never tried any.

Awhile back I started working on a mod to diversify the vanilla leveled lists a bit without having to install all those excess data files for personal use. I've recently been working on it again, and been thinking about tailoring it a bit to appeal to others. In the past I used some of the existing overhauls out there, but found them both to be a bit too bloated and still not quite fixing the problems of the vanilla leveled lists.

I have my own approach to things which I think might make it both a smaller, less invasive mod, and which would still fix the main problems with vanilla leveled lists. But, I wanted to get a general impression of what others thought before moving too far ahead and spending too much time on things.

If you have anything else to say about how vanilla spawns are setup, or what you don't like about overhauls, feel free to mention it here.
