DarkeWolf
Heyas ell :)Well, I did some researching on this, and it seems that a lot of win7 users are having problems with issues like this. With a variance of programs, not just games. One suggestion was to DL and run the newer C++ - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A5C84275-3B97-4AB7-A40D-3802B2AF5FC2&displaylang=en tho it seems that some of these most often times dont work, but providing them, just in case.-- there was other suggestions like turning off User Account Control (UAC)- http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-user-account-control-uac-the-easy-way-on-windows-vista/-- to creating an admin account and trying to do the install thru there- http://www.google.com/search?q=create+admin+account+windows+7&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1 You might also take a look at the actual folder that its trying to install to, right click on it and look at properties then go to where it lists the folder's actual permissions. and check to make sure that all accounts have full access to that folder. http://www.google.com/search?q=windows+7+folder+permissions&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1 Another thing that you *might* try is to just DELETE the folder that it's looking for, and MANUALLY add the folder yourself (create a new folder in that location, naming it the folder that the install directory needs), while you have admin rights. I definitely hope that something helps, as this sounds like a royally CRAPPY situation. :(
DarkeWolf
Sorry to double post, but thought of something else, that's pertinent and wanted Ell to get the email notice about it. Also try right clicking on the installer .exe and try running it in XP compatibility mode, preferably with UAC turned off but thats me, I hate UAC with a flaming fiery passion. Thandal
@Ell; I've also heard that running the "Installer", and/or the DA executable itself ("dagorigins.exe") in "XP Compatibility Mode" might help. Someone else just posted that doing the latter fixed a "sound lagging behind video" problem under Win7 that did NOT occur on the same machine under XP. I can't say from personal experience because I'm also running Win7, (64-bit, Home Premium, if that makes a difference) and have no problems with installs. And I've done a LOT of them in testing both 1.03 and 1.04! :teehee:
ell46
OK... thanks for the help and advice guys. I've got it installed  by holding down the shift key when I click on 'run as administrator' or words to that effect. I did a last minute Google before giving it another go after reading the help here and the first site I clicked on said to do this and low and behold as I've said it worked. The next hurdle is dealing with this new patch, at the moment I've install 1.02 and I'm wondering if I should leave it as is or miss 1.03 and go straight for 1.04  decisions, decisions. I've got Win7 premium and so far it has installed all my old software including DAO in folder called Program Files(x86) without any prompting from me, with my limited jargon skills and knowledge I'm assuming that this for 32 bit XP type programs, it will be interesting to see if anything ever gets installed in the Program Files folder :teehee: At this point in time I hate Windows Live and I hate Win7, it looks the bees knees, but it seems stupid insignifcant things have been moved and changed just to make life complicated, hiding the menue bar what a load of rubbish and yes I have worked out how to see it all the time before my Alt key has nothing written on it :wallbash: it hard work as it is installing and copying files and folders without having to find my way around Win7 at the same time. Might as well go to 1.04. It doesn't "fix" everything that got broken with 1.03, but haven't heard of it breaking anything else, and it does fix some stuff! (Well, there is the unintended roll-back of the AI Tactics scripting file... But unless you're a really sophisticated player who has highly customized what your party does on its own in combat, that won't matter.) I've got Win7 premium and so far it has installed all my old software including DAO in folder called Program Files(x86) without any prompting from me, with my limited jargon skills and knowledge I'm assuming that this for 32 bit XP type programs, it will be interesting to see if anything ever gets installed in the Program Files folder :teehee: You are correct about the difference between the two program folders. The (x86) one is for 32-bit/legacy applications. Haven't seen DA install anything at all in "Program Files". While I, too, find it frustrating that MS moves stuff around so that what I used to know how to do without thinking becomes a scavenger hunt (and "Help" often doesn't!) still, I heartily recommend Win7 over Vista or XP. As an IT secutity pro, I would counsel everyone to upgrade from XP, and Win7 is what Vista should have been for stability, compatibility, and especially driver support! DarkeWolf
Huh! Well, I NEVER woulda thought of holding down the shift key while clicking on Run as Admin. But thats awesome, and I am really glad to hear that you got it going ell :thumbsup:Yeah, I had a really similar issue with XP. They moved EVERYTHING! Its like... Ok, I USED to know how to do this... where the hell did you guys put it!?!?
