WhiskyTango
I need a solution to a problem.I am running under Vista and have had Oblivion Game of the Year edition up and running in the past. I had not played it for a long time and when I tried today, the screen would freeze right when it should have been loading the game, it did not matter which save was chosen and starting a new game ended with same result. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon X1650 series and I updated the drivers. This still did not work so I uninstalled it thinking I'd just download all the mods I had been using and some probably needed updates anyway. This was to no avail, same problem. Going through the forums I found several posts that pertained to uninstalls not working so I followed the help given and tried several tutorials thinking it was not fully uninstalled. Refreshing the .ini did not help, going through the registry and looking for any remains turned up nothing. Deleting the my games, Oblivion folder with all the saves. No results after several installs and uninstalls. I only found one post that had the exact same problem and it ended without the poster stating if he ever fixed the problem. Any ideas on what to try next?
Valkyrie
Make sure the game is not installed under programs. If it is, move it to like c/games. Make the folder if ya have to. Turn all you graphics down, especially in the drivers themselves. Ya also might wanna peruse thru this: Crash Stuff
WhiskyTango
Make sure the game is not installed under programs. If it is, move it to like c/games. Make the folder if ya have to. Turn all you graphics down, especially in the drivers themselves. Ya also might wanna peruse thru this: Crash Stuff Thanks for the advice and handy link. I have tried it both ways. My original config which did work was in C: and not in program files. I tried program files once just to see if it would make a difference, nope. I'll mess with the settings some, keep trying and keep an eye out for any more suggestions. If I do figure it out I will surely give credit and post the result. It is frustrating when you find threads that just end with no outcome. :wallbash: Thanks again! 8)
bben46
Most likely: you have changed some piece of hardware and the Oblivion.ini is still looking for the old one. Delete the Oblivion.ini in the users\your user name\my documents\my games\Oblivion folder. It will create another one the next time you start. Also, Have you tried without mods or save games - You can use this to make a clean vanilla data folder for troubleshooting (completely reversible)Bben's Oblivion Revert to Vanilla gamehttp://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=340 Have you tried my complete uninstall/reinstall? It covers how to clean the registry (You MUST reboot both before and after for a complete cleaning) . It has fixed many reinstall problems Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexushttp://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=240 It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice. WhiskyTango
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems I remember back when it was working, the word Oblivion was slowly zoomed in on the map, the map would begin to scroll and music was playing. If so it is not now, no sounds play until I press new game, load, etc. and a drum noise is heard. I can get into and change settings, but it's when I choose new game or exit is when it locks up. When the program is starting I do get the Oblivion Launcher music, Bethesda etc. prior to loading the actual game menu. Thought this info might help narrow down the problem. If there is not supposed to be any music on the menu then I guess it does not matter. Worth a try though. Thanks

WhiskyTango
 Problem solved! Pondering over the music not playing on the game menu got me to thinking it might be a sound problem. Kudos to Valkyrie for providing the link above. Though not the exact problems I had, several game problems seemed to stem from audio codecs. I downloaded a program called InstalledCodec and started turning off every codec, company by company that had been installed since last I played, which was some time ago. If anyone is keeping track codecs from www.viscomsoft are the problem in this case. Not sure if it is only one codec or all, I just disabled everyone of them from the company. Hope this information might help others with such issues. Thanks again everyone!
