zokushi
Ok. I've started crashing a lot recently and I haven't been able to narrow down why. The Only thing the crashes have in common is if the character I'm controlling is moving while the screen is shaking I CTD. I hate the screen shake effect anyway. Anyone know a way to disable it? I'm at a loss. I tried googling "dragon age screen shake" "dragon age frame buffer" "dragon age disable shaking" etc.etc. to no avail. Any help is appreciated. AbrasaxDrake
As for 'Screen Shaking" i'm not entirely sure what you mean, i cant say i've ever noticed shaking. But lets see if we can narrow down the problem. Where in the game are you? What patch version are you using? Most players i know don't use the frame buffer effect as it causes problems. zokushi
The screen shake occurs most noticeably when a bow user gets a crit. It's been happening since I did the Carta quest in Orzammar but it's still happening even outside the city. I'm using the 1.04 patch. Also, I have disabled Frame Buffer effects with no avail. It's strange since I didn't have any trouble until the crashing in Orzammar. Up until then I never CTD'd. Unfortunately, I can't remember what I might have changed prior to going in, so I'm not sure what I might have to change.
zokushi
Bit of an update: Apparently it wasn't the screenshake causing the CTD (as annoying as it might be anyway), but Wynne casting a Glyph. I disabled bother her glyph tactics for now. I'll update if I keep crashing, but so far no problems. It's strange since it didn't ALWAYS make me crash when she cast one. Although, it tended to only happen if I moved while she was casting it, but even then I don't think it always triggered a crash. Very Odd.
RustyBlade
Sounds to me like your video card is either getting hot or getting weak. I recently replaced my 7950GX2 1GB card with a GTS250 1GB and suddenly the lag was gone, the stuttering was gone, the crashing at certain points was gone and everything looked so much better too. Something to consider when you have some cash to spare.
DarkeWolf
That you're describing.... from what info you're giving, sounds a lot more like a video card, or a monitor issue than the game itself. Or even just the connection between your vid card and the mon. First thing would be to check to make sure that both ends of the cable are secure. Then check for any bad grounds n the cable. Yeah, I know what you mean. After I've been playing for a while and the game has done a good job of sucking down my system resources, the spell Winter's Grasp will cause a CtD on mine. I've removed it from My character's attacks as well, and just have to pray that an enemy doesnt use it.
zokushi
I just got a new video card about 4 months ago, so that isn't it. It's a 250 GTS. I run a program that keeps an eye on the temp of my gpu and cpu and neither are overheating during gameplay. It's just something to do with the Glyphs being cast behind me by a party member while I'm moving. It never crashes when an enemy casts it, and if I'm looking at wynne while she casts it I don't crash. It's all very wierd. It isn't like the glyphs are that awesome though, so I don't mind not using them.

It isn't like the glyphs are that awesome though, so I don't mind not using them.Having fought with CtDs on my QuadCore, 8GB, Win7-64bit system ever since the release of 1.03, I'm pretty well convinced my problems stem from a sound effects issue. Not a "sound" issue: muting the speakers or even disabling the soundcard doesn't fix things, (not that the game would be enjoyable/playable in that state anyway!) Rather, in my experience it's been some kind of interaction between the coding for certain in-game audio events coupled with the amount of potential on-screen video being managed, (like turning off the speakers, lowering the graphics settings doesn't seem to fix the issue. The program is still tracking all the things that are "active", even if they are not all displayed...) combined with the particular hardware driver and the way 64-bit Windows implements its HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer). The result, all too frequently, is: "Dragon Age has stopped working." :verymad: I've said that I'm going to replace my integrated HD audio with an older SoundBlaster 5.1 card and see what happens, but I haven't got up enough motivation to negotiate the tangle of cords, cables, and corners involved with opening my case and inserting boards. Plus, even after doing so, unless the CtDs disappear it won't provide a definitive explanation, only another negative result. :wallbash: And for me, the game becomes playable, (CtDs reduced adequately so that the fun outweighs the hassle) through the use of the "FO3 Large Memory Area Available" flag fix. So chasing down a better solution falls into the "When I get around to it." bucket.
zokushi
I agree it could be sound related. I have a setup similar to your own (vista 64/quad core/6gb ram) and use onboard sound, because I just don't care that much. I'm using the force 2ch stereo because I use a headset as well. I used CFF editor to check the nt header for "application can handle >2gb", but is there anything else I can do in that department?

Making that change in the .exe header is the only thing I've found that actually seems to have improved my situation. After doing so I can now play for hours before I notice any real lagging, and CtDs become occasional annoyances rather than an "Every time I turn around!" occurance.
