Operas and Theaters

Have you noticed that there is no other form of entertainment except the guy on the lute in the taverns? There should be classical outdoor theaters which hold operas and plays.

well, those were more common in Roman settings, not Nordic, and a giant open area would be freezing up in the north. And many southern holds aren't big on the culture. Markarth is constantly stuck in weird pasts, whether its the forsworn or the dwemer. and Riften is more interested in trade and bartering. that's probably their entertainment system, which is why they have such a pronounced market square

Yeah, that's more likely to be found in Cyradiil rather than in Skyrim. I'd expect an arena though. There actually was one that was cut from the game later. I think Thirteen Oranges restores the arena, his mods can be found on the Steam Workshop. He also restores a few towns from TES: Arena as well.

TO's mods require cleaning in TES5Edit.

That's absurd. Every race, Nord, or Atmoran, has it's stories to tell. Have you ever picked up a book in Skyrim and read it? I would love to find a local theater, outside, pull up a seat for the main act, and enjoy it, especially as it tells us about the legends of the First Era and Myths of Dragons!

Um, yes, every race has its story to tell, but did you notice something? Skyrim has Bards. The whole thing about Bards were that they were traveling performers. A group of them together would become an acting troup or a musical band. But you do realize that an out-and-open event just doesn't fit every culture.

Take literature for an example, yes, everyone wrote stories, but the format they wrote them in was different depending on the culture. Japan has their belief in mastering ones craft, so that they could perform an action with the least excess effort. This belief trickled down to their writing. Which is how the Haiku and Light Novel became so popular there. But in countries like England, class structure were how they established their culture. And playwriting became the common form because it allowed for the Playwright to dictate the roles of their actors, establishing some as more important than others.

Look at the culture of the Nords. They spend their time drinking in Inns. The Inns all have large fireplaces for both cooking food and warming people during the cold nights. Such cramp spaces makes large plays impossible. And Nords aren't going to go out in the blistering cold to watch some people pretend to be others.

Now, regions like the Rift might make good places for plays, except that the entire region is forested. Houses are built on islands to allow for room. Again, large theatres aren't very common. HOWEVER, you seem to have forgotten that there's already a guild in Riften filled with clever actors that tell wonderous tales and play many roles. The Thieves Guild. And if you want excitement and news, just go and watch the traders at work. The Smiths and the tradesmen all exchanging wares and making profits. Riften is a land ruled by profit. So if you want to tell a story in the Rift, might as well go and be a thief and make one up.

The Bards College is filled with playwrites, and there's even a small quest involving a writer getting published, but also remember that Solitude is filled with Imperials. People from a very Roman culture. Odds are the Imperials influenced the Bards by sharing their plays with them.

I could see a playhouse getting constructed in the Bards College or outside Riften (as Shakesphere's theatre was allocated to the sticks out back). But It would be a playhouse, not a courtyard for plays to be acted.

I think the idea is solid. What deathbymanga said is a very good point. I want to point out is that entertainment is not there just to be entertained, because people can find many things to entertain themselves with. Watching entertainment is a form or relexing and enjoyment, and people can do many things to relax instead of looking for entertainment... such as:

Bathing in communal settings (and it helps with the cold)

Fishing

Drinking (Nords love their mead

Brawls (nords love to fight)

What I would like to is more fighting arenas, fishing contests, as well as a playhouse in Solitude. I think that fits well with the Imperial culture that has been introduced to Solitude by the strong presence of the empire.

I do agree that an open theatre is not realistic for Skyrim.

I do recommend:

Fishing in Skyrim

Northern Bathhouses of Skyrim

Windhelm Fighter's Pit

as well as Wet and Cold Holidays.

I'm still on and off considering if I want Fishing in Skyrim. It's a good idea, I'm just not sure it will fit with my character. I like Northern Bathhouses a lot actually. If you are using JKs Whiterun though, keep in mind it's VERY close to the small yard added to Arcadia's Cauldron. If you are using the newest version, it will sit in a small yard. Older version of JKs Whiterun preferred if using it with Northern Bathhouses. Also, Morthal, if using ETaC, there is already a bathhouse there (a better one actually), and the one from Northern Bathhouses will clip with the tavern/wall from ETaC.

a fighters pit would be fun, though I'd like for a way for my character to use Speech to craft books, the better his speech, the better the quality the book. And maybe there could be some playwright books that would lead to some Quicktime events of actors
