Crashing help

I just bought the Fallout 3 GOTY and installed it. My game crashes ALOT. I'm thinking it has something to do with my operating system. I have Windows 7, and the box says you need Vista or XP. I believe I have enough memory. At least I'm pretty sure.

I have Oblivion for the pc, with all the DLC's and even a BUNCH of mods. I uninstalled Oblivion.

So... any ideas on what could help me play it with less crashes?

What's your hardware?

also did you install in the default directory? (e.g. C:\Program Files\......)

if you did you should probably uninstall and reinstall - FO3 don't play well with the default install - has to do with UAC.

If you've got a multi-core CPU you need to change your ini file.

Check out;

You need to add iNumHWThreads=2 - just read that page - in fact read the whole guide it's well worth it.

Honestly, it's my cousins computer. I live with him, so I call it mine.

We don't know what our hardware is (not really sure what you meant by that ><). And we don't have a multi-core CPU. If we reinstall it, is there a certain directory we need to install it to? Or would reinstalling it to the default help? And would we have to reinstall the DLC's?

I see people trying to blame problems on Win7 every day. The game works fine on Win7, Really. Many people have it on Win7 and it works for them. If it doesn't work for you, Its not Win7.

I also have the Fallout3 GOTY DVD version and it runs great on my Win7 x64 multicore system with NO special changes to accommodate the multicore processor and I do not run in compatibility mode. I still get occasional crashes as that is normal with the gambryo engine as it dosn't handle releasing ram very well.

If you don't use mods it works fine in the default install location. If you do use mods, Windows UAC will try to block them - as it tries to block anything that makes any changes in a program installed in the UAC protected folders. Because that is what UAC is supposed to do.

UAC protected folders are 'Program Files', and 'Program files (x86)' nearly all programs (games are programs too) will automatically default to installing there - Unless you specify a different location to take advantage of the extra protection.

Best to install outside of the UAC protected folders. I install all games to C:\Games

So my Oblivion is in C:\Games\Oblivion and my Fallout3 is in C:\Games\Fallout3. Steam games also - they are installed to C:\Games\Steam which keeps the steam games away from the UAC also.

I'm not really blaming Win7, I was just saying that it might have been a possibility.

Anyway, I reinstalled it and tested it for a while. Worked fine. Now I'm going to try installing a few mods. If it stops working, I'll try installing it to a different directory, outside of UAC protected folders.

Thanks for the help guys!! :D

Yes, as bben46 was talking about people complaining about windows 7 every day, he is right. I have lost count as to how many times I have helped someone through a windows 7 issue.

Anyway, you are here for help, not to listen to me. So, to start off. How many processors? Are you using a x32 bit or a x64 bit system?

I'm not sure. This is my cousin's computer, not mine. And as I said before, I wasn't complaining or blaming Win7, I just thought that MAYBE it could've been an issue...

Anyway, I got it working. Sorta. Now I'm having problems with some DLC content appearing as an "!" with a bunch of red. Like a missing mesh on Oblivion. But I'm going to start a new thread, beacause this one is about crashing.

Thanks for your help though :D
