Nif files are meshes... Usually there is a new texture with is (.dds file). If it is just a Nif file, it is usually a moders resource, meaning that you would have to open up the CS and assign something to use that Nif. If however, it is something like a body part, bigger breasts on women for instance, it doesn't need to be attached to anything since it is designed to replace the default Nif.

Depending on what the Nif is, it would probably go into some directory like

Data\Meshes\armor\"set type"\"M" or "F"\

Data\Meshes\Weapons\

Data\Meshes\Clothing\"set type"\"M" or "F"\

Data\Meshes\Characters\_Male\

Usually, people make zips/rars that have those folders setup so you just need to extract them to your rata directory. If not, I wouldn't have very much faith in the quality of the files.

I might be lost and confused, since I haven't dealt with NIF files in my entire time playing/modding Oblivion and I've just come back after being away a month with no Oblivion, but look up ArchiveInvalidation.txt . I think that file is the key to your problem. If I Recall Correctly, it is to contain a list of Oblivion files that are to be pre-empted by new files. (Assuming you keep the original compressed archives.) I believe both the obmm and Oblivion Content Validator can build this file for you. You can also write it manually.

I'm a bit confused now too... .nif files are 3d meshes. I thought this was common knowledge. The default .nif files are packed in the .bsa archives. New meshes are put into created directories in the data folder. Any plugin worth its bytes should have a readme detailing this.

I would request that the topic starter post a link or name of the mod so that we may get a better idea of what we are dealing with.

I'm just guessing, but I think in this instance the NIF is a replacement for an existing official Oblivion mesh. Usually you replace the texture as well when doing this, from what I've seen.

Of course, more likely than not, it's really supposed to be a modder resource, in which case Moon666 is up a creek without a paddle.
