danscott84
I have only played one mage character, and that was a long time ago. Without modding spell powers, abilities, etc, what is a good build for a mage character. I am thinking that I will go along the lines of spirit healer/arcane warrior when I reach those levels, but what base powers make for a good mage that is also fun to play. The main reason I have not played mages much is that they are a little boring for me, but I think my next playthrough will be a mage since I have not done it for so long. Thandal
As a general approach, I go for all the elemental spells (starting with the Fire chain, since Morri is already well along the Ice one. Buffing your Party with both is fun, and it doens't have to be the same caster who throws all the AoE spells to generate the SotC!) When offered, I grab "Power of Blood" (in the SP WK DLC) then go for "Blood Mage" (mostly just to piss-off Wynne.) By the time I can take AW, I'm almost a tank anyway! [ EDIT: I always get mixed up by the naming because in-game, the PLACE (mountain? fortress? both?) is called "Soldier's Peak", but the TITLE of the DLC is Warden's Keep. Oh, and orthographically, maybe that should be "Wardens' ", but I think that discussion belongs on a completely different forum! ] Edited August 20, 2010 by Thandal
WarPrincess
I have played a mage at least 10 times -- it's my favorite. I always start with the Primal cold spells and glyph of paralysis, then focus on the spirit spell line that includes Spell Might and Mana Clash. Mana Clash is by far my favorite spell, because you can wipe out most mages with a single blast and do serious damage to the ones that are left. I generally choose the Blood Mage/Archane Warrior classes, since Wynne is already a Spirit Healer. By focusing on offensive spells, I don't need Morrigan, who I don't care for. DarkeWolf
I like to go with disabling spells myself. Spells that can slow an enemy down, harrass spellcasters and rogues with stun or paralysis and then throw degen spells on them to help the tanks take them out.I also like the No Friendly Fire mod, and throwing AoE constant effect spells, like Blizzard into the mix. That rocks.
danscott84
Thanks for the advice everyone. It is very helpful. I am starting a mage character using the various things you have brought up. Hopefully it will be more fun for me this time around. (usually play as DW warrior or rougue, and lately been trying 2H warrior) Thandal, I know what thing you are talking about at Soldier's Peak. I used it once and it didn't work real well with my warrior character, so I'll try the blood mage route and use Avernus' potion as well. ;)

Didn't have to waste time and talents to get coatings, just "taint that blade" and move on. (Plus, Warriors can take the self-inflicted damage it causes easier than Mages... But maybe I'm not doing it right?)
RustyBlade
The Power of Blood (wiki link) has some nice pluses if you don't mind that awful twitching your character does while it is active. Personally I find it about as annoying as my (real) dog laying on the floor slurping on itself.
Thandal
I don't mind the twitching while I'm in combat (too much else going on to notice, really.) Then I deactivate it immediately afterwards, so don't keep taking the damage OR suffering spasms. ;D
