Windows 7 problem

OK so for many years now I have been happily running XP, finally decided to bite the bullet and act like its 2010.

I have also been playing FO3 since its inception and modding it since the GECK. Anyway since I have updated I haven't been able to run fallout.

First off how do I get my saved games (I saved them on an external HD) back I cannot seem to find the folder the file routes are goofy (WTF is program files x86?)

Secondly the files are no longer the GECK icons.

Is there a trick to setting up FO3 in Windows 7? I read on the FOMM page about reinstalling to a different location this work?

Or should I just go back to XP, as so far I am EXTEMELY unimpressed with Windows 7. :wallbash:

thanks.

EDIT: derp use search function first

If you saved the saves onto an external device, you need to obviously place them in the correct folder again. If you have installed Fallout correctly, they will need to be placed in the folder path Documents > My Games > Fallout3 > Saves > (The folder that appears next will be named unique to something you have set up, in my case it is Nucl3arSt3v3) Place the saves in that folder, and they will appear in the game. I run windows 7 x64 bit and have no problems. So, if you need more assistance feel free to ask.

I have found Win7 to be much more stable than XP

Copying the game itself from the backup is not going to work. You must do a fresh install. And do not put it in the default location as that will cause problems with the Windows UAC protection. I have been recommending C:\Games\Fallout3 as the location to install. Be sure to test it before doing anything else. Then be sure you have the latest patch installed and tested also.

Now, MOVE the entire data folder from the new install to a safe place - it is now your vanilla backup. Then COPY the entire data folder from your previous set up into its place in the new game. Do the same with the save game folder. DO NOT copy the original ini files (fallout.ini and falloutPrefs.ini) as they will be different for your new system. Any utility programs such as FOSE should be reinstalled and not copied over.

Please note that the file system for the save games has changed a little between XP & 7

OLD (XP) C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\My Documents\My games\Fallout 3\saves

New (Vista & Win7) C:\Users\your user name\My Documents\My Games\Fallout 3\saves

thanks for the replies. one thing I do notice now that I have installed the GECK again. My ESM files and ESP files used to be little briefcases and they used to open GECK when I clicked them. They no longer do.

As for Windows 7 thus far I am unimpressed with it because my past reformats and subsequent game reloads have never been this much trouble. The reason I ask is because I am looking for someone to talk me out of reloading XP lol.

thanks again gents

Easy fix this one. Just right click on file , choose open with, next pop up select the choose default progam option at bottom. Then go to the GECK.exe file and select it. All your ESM & ESP files will now default to opening with GECK when you double click them.
