Oblivion crashes on the Bethesda screen. I have tried all I can think

I have tried searching for solutions, I've tried them all and it still crashes. I've tried installing some direct X thing. I've tried installing the latest patch. I've uninstalled all my mods, deleted the texture/mesh folders so I can make sure all the texture mods are uninstalled. I've uninstalled/reinstalled Oblivion like 3 times. It gets either through the "bethesda" thing and crashes, or half way though it and crashes. I can't even play in windowed mode cause it crashes with the black "bethesda" screen with no words. Why is Oblivion crashing? What can I do to fix this?

The only thing I can think of is deleting your My Documents > My Games > Oblivion folder.

If that doesn't work, try uninstalling and removing every possible trace of Oblivion from your computer before re-installing.

And I can't really think of anything else.

I have had this issue before as well. My problem, I do believe, was as follows.

Oblivion worked great for me, up until I decided to enable HDR lighting. It wouldn't work, not for anything. Everytime I enabled it, it would still be disabled the next time I booted up Oblivion. Finally, Oblivion said "enough!" (or something like that) and I started encountering the problem you have. I uninstalled Oblivion, and erased all traces of it from my system (saves and all, though I backed them up ofcourse). Also, after I reinstalled, I entered into my nvidia control panel (as I have dual 8800 gt's) and I disable all the antialiasing for Oblivion, seen as Oblivion doesn't seem to like HDR and antialiasing together. After that, everything seems to work great, with HDR enabled and everything.

I don't know if this is the same as what happened to you, but this whole reinstalling thing does seem worth a shot!
