GNR Radio Silent

Hello folks,

Here's my problem, I hope someone can help:

Problem: GNR songs no longer play on my Pip-Boy. Three Dog's speech and Dashwood plays are fine. GNR songs play fine on radios, only the Pip-Boy is the problem.

When did this happen?: Right after switching from GalaxyNewsRadio[20].esp to GalaxyNewsRadio[60].esp on the GNR - More Where That Came From (MWTCF) mod by OldManMose76. GalaxyNewsRadio[20].esp worked absolutely fine for me with no problems for ages.

Further Problem: Even when I disable/remove the mod, or try other esps from the mod (e.g. [40]), GNR songs are silent. Even when disabling the mod and loading a save from BEFORE installing MWTCF my songs are still silent. This is what's really puzzling me. Re-enabling GalaxyNewsRadio[20].esp and loading previous saves which used also produces silent songs.

So, my BIG problem is that I can't get GNR songs anytime now. I can't figure out what has happened that would produce this result. I haven't installed any new codecs since before installing FO3.

I wondered if shifting esps might have messed up some script variables or somesuch, but this shouldn't be the case for old saves with all their original mods. I don't have any other mods which alter GNR, and I have always edited the RadioGNR script to be compatible with BrokenSteel (and that worked fine with GalaxyNewsRadio[20].esp).

What I Have Tried to Do: I looked around for this problem, but couldn't find a solution. I tried some fixes suggested on Stuttering forums, but my problem isn't stuttering, and they had no impact. These included:

1. Increasing audio cache size (double)

2. Disabling non-essential codecs

3. Setting hardware acceleration to Basic

I also tried some in-game solutions. This only worked once and was not repeatable:

1. I thought that switching radio stations then switching back to GNR might 'reset' any buggy variables. Since I am playing a post-Take It Back game with Broken Steel I couldn't use Enclave radio. So I travelled to where I could get Peoples Radio of America. I switched to that, then switched back to GNR, and - voila! - music returned. But shortly thereafter I was attacked by Supermutants and the game hung while trying to whip out my Pip-Boy. On restarting FO3 I wasn't able to repeat the trick, i.e. still had silent radio.

2. I tried making a 'clean' save. Removing the MWTCF esp, saving without it, then enabling the esp. No help, except maybe one time I got music for a few seconds, then silence. Once again, not repeatable.

Really hope someone can help as I enjoy the atmosphere of MWTCF and don't want to lose GNR radio even in a vanilla install.

Well, I've found the solution to the problem. It seems there's a calibration mis-match in Fallout 3's default sound controls.

Setting the Master Volume below 5 bars leads to music tracks being silent, including the opening title music. Speech and Radio voiceovers, however, play normally. Setting Master Volume back to 5 pips or above restores music playback.

Silly, but there it is.
