Is DAO worth it?

I may be making a fool of myself for asking, but is Dragon Age worth buying? I'm a huge fan of Oblivion and FO3. Is DAO free roam like Oblivion and FO3? kill at will? what time frame is it based on? (Oblivion: Midevil, FO3: Future. ect)

Thanks,

@Schauble; Not making a fool, just overly cautious.

Answer to Topic Question: Absolutely! This is the best RPG I've found in years. But as I've posted in other places here at Nexus, for me it's all about the story, and Dragon Age has one of the best! (Of course you're asking it on a Forum dedicated to the game, so perhaps we're a bit biased here.)

Answer to second question: Isn't totally linear, but isn't an "open world" game either. While you can play through the story in an infinite number of sequences, (very little of it MUST be done in any particular order) it always involves the same "set" of events and locations, and it always leads to the same penultimate

(The Landsmeet)

and ultimate

(Rooftop Battle)

events. But even then, there are a significant number of permutations available (and most of them are "up to you" or depend upon your choices, either at the moment or earlier in the game) so that you can re-play with enthusiasm and surprises. I've just finished my eighth full game, and had several "new" (to me) situations and conversations occur.

Answer to third question: Can't "Kill at Will", but certainly can play as a PC who's "only in it for myself". The variety of attitudes and personalities that can be expressed by the PC is pretty broad.

Answer to third question: Set in a mythical "Swords and Sorcery" world. Deliberate correlation between the nations and peoples of "Thedas" and the societies of (approx.) 12th - 14th Century (CE) Europe.

So go buy it already! You'll have a ball.
