Hello everyone,

I am running Skyrim with 86 plugins at the moment. Some of these are vanilla variants of mods that otherwise have DLC versions, some are just oblivious to what DLC you have.

I'm guessing it would probably break my game (or the mods) if I buy and install let's say Dawnguard or Dragonborn while I am already progressing with a character but I just wanted to read it from someone.

Would I really have to start clean and re-install all the mods ?

Thanks !

i think the 1st time i used dawnguard was in mid-game but i didn't have many mods installed so i could easilly manage them and continue playing
recently i installed hearthfire and had a CTD problem that loot (obviously) and tesvedit couldn't detect and i almost uninstalled everything if i did not remember the actual mod's name in the last moment as i installed the mod wich were causing the ctd only few hours before hearthfire
my guess is that it depends on wich mod you are using as some do not cause a problem if you installed them before the dlc
so you can just make a save before installing the dlc and then try it and if you have a problem at some point that you can't fix you can always desactivate the dlc and go back to your save

No guarantees but I am strongly convinced that won't break your game. I also don't think that you would have to "reinstall" mods.

The DLCcs don't alter the main game, and thus don't touch the plugins' master, but rather add new master files.

Just make some backups of your saves in case things get wonky (a few CTDs every now and then are not a reliable indicator though, as even with a virgin installation of Skyrim they tend to happen).

i am affraid that i can't aggree with you

some mods require a patch for each of the DLCs you have installed

i can say this for sure although i am no expert in these things since i ve had an issue with it myself

in my case it was 1 mod from about 60 mods so i guess it doesn't happen very often

I guess I'll buy the DLC's on my next playthrough then. I have never finished the main quest anyways, or finished any of the guilds quest lines in 300 hours of gameplay.

Im a noob to modding and have pretty much broke my game a hundred times and it fixed again while never starting over....lol

I've heard all these stories about bloated saves and what not. But, if installed every mod... i've ruined my game a million times over. And im still good.

Just do what i do. Use the MOD organzier. Its the only way to make sense of anything.

Make sure you know exactly what every mod you have does. Go inside any vanilla interior and install what ever you want.

Step back outside... If it Crashes. Find the conflict. If not.. you're golden. :D

It'll work but may mess up depending on mods you already have installed so you may have to uninstall then re-install them. Especially mods running support for dawnguard or dragonborn etc.

no. dragonborn (and thus the 1.9 update) breaks old saves. you can load them, yes, but it's really unplayable. you're better off starting anew.
