FO3Edit with Steam

I am currently trying to use FO3Edit to troubleshoot some issues I am having with crashes. My problem is that every time I open the program it tells me "Fatal: Could not open registry key: \SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout3\ ." I am using Steam so I the install path and registry path would not look anything like that.

Is there any way I can get this to work so I can figure out what is going wrong with my other problem?

The other problem is I crash whenever I get within a certain radius of Minefield.

Put FO3edit an the hardcoded thingy in Bethedsa softworks/ fallout 3 Wherevers STEAM puts that at? Then buy retail discs from now on, hey there's an idea...

I've heard folks de-steaming installs, moving it so it mirrors a retail disc install or modder install ( it's own folder) C:/bethesda softworks/fallout 3... Got me though, I use retail discs.

What kind of crashes are you trying to get a diagnosis on?

That minefield one you mentioned is probably coruption. You can figure that out if when you started a new game an went to minefield it didn't happen again. If it was a hard problem, meaning everytime you go to that area it crashes then it's a problem in the mods or even the LOD of the minefield cell in the wasteland. In the coruption case, most likely what happened is that something got thrown into a Havok physics glitch either at the speed of light or into a movement to which the computer won't accept for example a never ending loop, or just Havok related movement. The computer AI of NPC's can also cause this from just going corupt. Even corupted save games can cause it. Getting past it is all experimental, for example using cheats to enter a cell that is located in that part of the worldspace then exit the cell, teliport or come from a different angle or even go somewhere wait 3 days an then go back, go back at nighttime, go back with bullet time enabled in slow motion.

FO3edit.exe and it's dat file need to be in <folders prior to your steam folder>\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout 3 (or fallout 3 goty if you have game of the year edition)

Thus if you installed Steam to C:\Games it would be "C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout 3 goty\

If you haven't installed it yet, you'll have a similar problem with G.E.C.K. It defaults to program files, but would have to be installed to the same folder Fo3 Edit needs.

As for Minefield, how close is a certain radius? I had a tad of trouble myself until I "took longer" getting in -worried about issues- and by then "Arkansas" -IE the crazy old guy on the building- had greased a Mercenary group that was in the area. My theory is my system suddenly decided the all NPC firefight was too much to think about. Funny that. Only 4 combatants total, but I suppose all the mine detection routines -NPC and frag mine- bogged down the game.
