Frequent CTD near/in cities and when entering/leaving buildings

Hello everyone, latetely I've been struggling with frequent CTDs on my game. I feel like I've tried everything so I don't know what to do know.

It's pretty annoying because it keeps on happening everytime I fast travel to cities (or just generaly longer distance), however not all of them for example Whiterun or even Riverwood which is one of the most memory consuming places.

It also happens when I enter or leave a building, mostly traders - again pretty weird that not everywhere - Whiterun - crash, Riverwood - nothing, Solitude - crash, Riften - Crash

And also when I'm near some of the cities again Whiterun is crash free on this, Solutide crashes all the time, Riften crashes mostly but sometimes doesn't for example when I don't fast travel there.

Okay if it's not very confusing I'd like you to take a look at my LOOT list and see what mods I have :

I also have ENB istalled, it's the Project ENB one, with ENBoost & SSME, I've read the Skyrim ENB guide and tweaked the settings. I also have some mods like Skyrim performance PLUS to gain additional FPS.

Now I'm running the game on a Laptop, MSI GE 70 with these specs:
- GTX 765m 2GB
- 8GB RAM
- i7 4700MQ up to 3,2Ghz

My settings for the game are all on Highest, except for shadows on medium and AA and AO turned off - ENB got this, plus I've enabled Vsync in my Nvidia control panel.

I can also provide the ini file if needed. Now I would like to see if someone can help me narrow down the issue cause I'm out of ideas.

Thanks.

CTD in certain places http://s1.zetaboards.com/bbenlibrary/topic/4841774/1/#new

On fast travel or when entering a city is possibly running out of Vram - it has to dump the old video data while loading all new and gets swamped - back off on your video settings to test for this

how to ask for help in a way that will get more responses. http://s1.zetaboards.com/bbenlibrary/topic/5686144/1/#new

Fixed it yes !!!!!

Thank you for your tips, VRAM was indeed the problem.

I figured out that I must have too much of the Ultra Texture mods - I cut the quality of Skyrim 2K Texture Pack in half - didn't even notice a difference unless starring at the textures trying to find one.

Then I also switched the Ultimate HD Fire effects from Ultra preset to Medium - again, not really a difference

And last of the things - 4K snow, I switched to 2K preset.

After all this, I downloaded the "No boring sleep" mod and slept for 31 days so the cells got reset.

So far, I was able to fast travel through the whole map, Riften was the first place, killed a dragon there, ran around the forests near it for a while. Then I fast traveled to Whiterun to one of the traders that gave me CTDs before - nothing. So I tried Solitude places of CTDs - nothing. One last time I fast traveled back to Riften and still no crash - the game is running for an hour without a single problem now and still going.

So if anyone is having this problem, for me it was VRAM and too intense graphics. Again, the difference after cutting the quality was really not noticeable for me.

Thank you bben46.

  • 6 years later...

I THINK i've found a potential solution - Double check that your Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini in your Documents folder weren't set back to defaults of locked vSync & Frame Rates. Something (Vortex, FNIS, who knows) was removing the lines needed to unlock my frame rate. I added them back and the CTD on travel or entering / exiting buildings stopped.

I followed this guide https://www.reddit.c...ion_at_144_fps/

  • SkyrimPrefs.ini, under [Display], set iVSyncPresentInterval=0
  • In Skyrim.ini, under [Display], Add bLockFramerate=0
  • add to the bottom of Skyrim.ini:
    [HAVOK]
    fMaxTime=0.0069

I edited my "baked" ini's also. Hope this solution holds for me and provides some help to others.
