JohnPascal
What New Vegas really needs to make it feel complete is more mimes. Can someone make a mime companion, preferably with voice acting? Maybe add a quest to go with him where you have to find some invisible rope that he lost in a factory that is conveniently guarded by lots of enemies. Definitely not fiends though, because that would be stupid. They should be something tougher, like enclave soldiers. He should have a really cool backstory too. Like maybe he came from some tribe out in Arizona of mimes and he's also the last of his kind because the NCR pacified all the tribes in Arizona already. But wouldn't voice acting be a bit out of place for a mime? Mime def; "the theatrical technique of suggesting action, character, or emotion without words, using only gesture, expression, and movement." JohnPascal
Of course not! After all, it's New Vegas! Anything can happen. Besides, we already have dozens of mute npcs from mods, what's the worst that could happen if you add a talking mime?

devinpatterson
Of course not! Right, of course not. Why would dialog be out of place, it's just a defining characteristic of the mime. It's actually in the definition; "A mime artist (from Greek μῖμος, mimos, "imitator, actor")[1] is someone who uses mime as a theatrical medium or as a performance art, involving miming, or the acting out a story through body motions, without use of speech." After all, it's New Vegas! Anything can happen. Sure, anything. Heck how about a quadriplegic acrobat? Besides, we already have dozens of mute npcs from mods, what's the worst that could happen if you add a talking mime? Not really the question though is it? It doesn't have to go beyond the resulting mod simply being crappy. If you argument is what's the worse that can happen, it doesn't carry a lot of weight for *why* it *should* be done. It's not rocket surgery, but I'll try and walk you through it. There aren't a lot of voiced companions because it's very labor intensive. It's not the hardest thing to do in a mod, but it is tedious. I know, because I have a little lady I need to get around to releasing to the community; VIDS; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlwltPXTjNY&list=UUhKTr5RPpqZOdIc4zt_StGw&index=16 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgXXQQ_YHHk&list=UUhKTr5RPpqZOdIc4zt_StGw If your going to ask someone to put in some serious work for you, you're going to have to have a good idea and really sell it. Taking out a iconic feature of a character isn't doing the mod any favors. You'v essentially got some guy or girl in white pancake makeup. Typically you want to emphasize the defining characteristics of a actor. For instance Christine's (DM) gestures in her mute dialog could be a useful addition to the npc, and streamline the work process since the modder wouldn't have to work with audio. Anyway, it's your request, and you can ask for anything. However with the ideas of; talking mimes, enclave guarding an invisible rope and mime tribes I don't think your going to have a whole lot of modders clamoring to put this together for you. Best of luck.
JohnPascal
It was a joke but clearly it didn't resonate with readers too well. JoKelly here brought my hopes up because he/she understood it but obviously there wasn't enough context for everyone to understand what the joke was. What New Vegas really needs to make it feel complete is more mimes. There are a ton of mods out there without voice acting. There are so many installed on my game that it feels like I'm surrounded by either mutes or mimes. That doesn't detract from the quality of the mod but it eventually it starts to break immersion. Maybe add a quest to go with him where you have to find some invisible rope that he lost in a factory that is conveniently guarded by lots of enemies. It's a fetch quest. It's the most basic type of quest a modder can make. Go here, grab this item that I need and give it to me. It's a nice introduction for someone who's new to modding but that doesn't stop it from being overdone or, as it often is, out of place in a story. Why would he have dropped it there? Why is it suddenly surrounded by people who are so unreasonable that they'll shoot you on sight? Why does he need invisible rope so badly? They should be something tougher, like enclave soldiers. He should have a really cool backstory too. Like maybe he came from some tribe out in Arizona of mimes and he's also the last of his kind because the NCR pacified all the tribes in Arizona already. I've intentionally butchered the lore here. Why on Earth would Enclave soldiers be protecting a piece of invisible rope or even a factory in the first place? Arizona is Legion territory, the NCR wouldn't be there. There are way too many mods that have a great concept but don't pay enough attention to the lore of Fallout, which is sad because Fallout's lore is so very fun to play with. It's really bothersome when you're going to some supposedly untouched city full of riches and technology only to find some irradiated pile of rubble crawling with hostile Brotherhood of Steel Outcasts. It's immersion breaking, lore breaking, and practically nonsensical. The worst part is that this applies to so many mods out here on the Nexus. I was really hoping that I wouldn't have to explain the joke but I suppose it's my fault. You can't blame your audience if they don't share your sense of humor. Anyway, this thread was satirical. For anyone reading after I post this, don't take it too seriously. Edited January 11, 2015 by JohnPascal
devinpatterson
It was a joke actually a joke causes usually causes amusement or is comedic. Don't double down on the stupid, just let it go.
JohnPascal
If it were just a stupid request I wouldn't have been able to pick it apart in so many ways because I wouldn't have written it to be that way. Point is, it was satirical; you didn't get it; JoKelly did; most people won't, like you. It's not your fault, it was mine. I didn't give people enough to go off of and that I've been asking for some unusual companions over the months doesn't help. Edit: As a tangent, I'll say that insulting me or make passive agressive remarks implying that my post was just stupid and has no value doesn't add to the argument. I'm happy to admit that I made a mistake in my assumtions regarding my audience but nothing more needs to be said about this. devinpatterson
If it were just a stupid request I wouldn't have been able to pick it apart in so many ways Actually the opposite is true. For example a flawed argument is easy to pick apart, not so for something solid. because I wouldn't have written it to be that way. The concept that it can't be a stupid request because you wouldn't have written is some seriously broken logic. Your "proof" is a tautology; It can't be stupid because then it would be stupid. Point is, it was satirical; See you'v already defended it point by point in post #6. You said you didn't like all the mute companions, that the rope is a fetch quest which is a nice introduction to quests etc. you didn't get it; JoKelly did; most people won't, like you. It's not your fault, it was mine. That's the second time you'v put words in JoKelly's mouth. It's pretty obvious to me his post doesn't in any way support what your claiming, but I'm not going to make a edict about it, because I'm not going to speak for JoKelly. But if you have any doubt just ask him...it's easy enough to do. He believe he was simply injecting a little humor into the thread. I didn't give people enough to go off of and that I've been asking for some unusual companions over the months doesn't help. If you want to claim that, go ahead. Honestly it's not that big of a deal if you didn't know about mimes and dialog. No one really cares per se. I just made some suggestions in my 2nd post to streamline the workload, enhance teh mime character and sell the mod. It's when you try to use some seriously fubar'd logic to "prove" it was satirical that the post gets annoying. That's why I said let it go, instead of doubling down and trying to "prove" your point via nonsensical logic. Edit: As a tangent, I'll say that insulting me or make passive agressive remarks implying that my post was just stupid and has no value doesn't add to the argument. I'm happy to admit that I made a mistake in my assumtions regarding my audience That's not a tangential point, it's germane to teh thread and I'd like to reply to it. I'm not insulting you, as a person. I can differentiate you from your behavior or your ideas. If I say you have a bad idea, I'm not saying your a bad person, one doesn't imply the other. "The stupid" I refereed to in my 3rd post, is trying to "proof" the thread was satirical by laying down a logical foundation that is shakier than quicksand. but nothing more needs to be said about this. I have no animosity toward you personally, but if you bring up points, you need to be able to accept someone addressing those same points. You have a great latitude regarding the freedom of your speech, but you also need to understand so do others. I don't have anything additional to say regarding teh thread, but you can't be surprised if I respond to additional posts you make, it's the sort of nature of a discussion forum. JohnPascal
Oh and I thought we'd moved beyond this silly thread. The reason why I say JoKelly understood the joke is because I sent him a private message in which he confirmed that the did. If JoKelly is reading this right now, I'm sorry that I didn't ask for your permission before quoting a pm. LOL I wouldn't expect to many to figure it out. the worst that could happen would be some one actually makes you a Mime mod. New Vegas, HellRaiser in an invisible box To which I responded: That would be awesome. It would be hilarious if someone actually made a companion like what I described. Basically, I'm not sticking words in anybody's mouth but my own. I don't have a lot of time to write this answer but I'd just like to say that I honestly thought that you were just playing along with the intentionally stupid idea. That is, until you wrote your very confused post where it became clear to me that you genuinely didn't understand. And to defend one of my points, I'm saying that the original post was intentionally stupid, (satire tends to be, go look at The Onion's old work or anybody similar [Multiple Stab Wounds May Be Harmful To Monkeys is one of my favorite titles for their videos]) and thus was easy to pick apart because I created it for the purpose of picking it apart. That's all I have time for. If you'd like to continue arguing about this thing that I'm getting bored of, then feel free. I'll probably check back once every few days and maybe take the time to write an answer.
