Oblivion Crashes, When I open it!!

Hello Forums,

I've got a critical problem with my oblivion.

I wanted to download FCOM. It recommends to start with a new install so I re-installed Oblivion, nothing wrong here.. Then I installed FCOM after some thumb twiddling. Later I installed the rest of my must have mods. And when I went to launch Oblivion (via OBSE) it just crashes and goes straight to the desktop...

I'll give you the Following (in order too!) Mod list, Graphic Enhancers, Utilities, BSA list, Ini and my Computer Specs

Mod List:

Graphic Enhancers:

Utilities:

BSA List:

ini:

Well, If you bothered to go through all of that, I thank you and await your reply. While I wait I'll go Play some Civilization V!

The best way to install mods is one by one, testing for crashes and anomalies after each addition. Testing for an hour or two is best. Since you're unsure why you're crashing I have to assume you installed in 'chunks' adding multiple mods at a time. Now I understand that with FCOM you need to install more than one at a time, I'm not talking about that. But what you need to do is start with a fresh install, install FCOM, test for at least a few hours for stability with only FCOM installed. Having a stable FCOM can be a task in itself. If that's all well and good then you start adding additional mods one by one, again testing after each.

The best thing I can suggest is to start disabling mods in 'chunks' until your game will start. After you get the game where it's playable start adding mods back one at a time until you crash. This way if and when you crash you know exactly what mod you just installed and that way you can try to determine what it's conflicting with and if you can avoid the conflict. If you cannot avoid the conflict then you may just have to avoid that mod. Another thing, why do you have two Bashed Patches? Usually only one is needed per Load Order so I strongly suggest you eliminate one and only use one Patch. Because as it is you're second patch will overwrite and potentially conflict with the first one loaded. This could very well be the reason for your crash.

You also need to update your masterlist for BOSS, it's slightly out of date. Just go to the BOSS download page here on Nexus and the updated masterlist is there, get the most recent.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end; then stop. ~Lewis Carrol, Alice in Wonderland

In this case, the beginning is where you install the game. The best place is NOT the default location (unless you have Win XP) as that allows Vista and Win7 UAC to block mods and other programs.

Recommended: C:\Games\Oblivion

If you need it, Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=240

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.

Now be sure you have the latest patch as it is needed for many mods

Look in the lower left corner when you start the game for your version. The latest patch is v1.2.0146

Go here for patches: http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm

Next, OBSE is required for many mods also, Get the latest version here: http://obse.silverlock.org/

And the utility programs, get the latest versions.

OBMM: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2097

Wrye Bash: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22368

Don't make the noob mistake of installing a mass of mods all at once and expecting them, to just work. The time you think you save wil be more than lost in troubleshooting.

Install a few at a time and test - make sure they are working before adding more to the list.

Ok Thanks for your replies.

Well I did what you guys said, All of the Mods work fine on their own, but as soon as I activate FCOM and launch Oblivion it just CTD's as soon as I open it up  .Then I decided to just use FCOM with OOO and Frans. Still CTD's when I open up oblivion (through OBSE)

So, does anyone have any Idea of what the problem could be?

Thanks again,

Eltath.

I'm unsure by the way you worded your post so these first two questions are what I'm not clear on.

(1)Are you trying FCOM by itself? (2)Or are you trying to activate FCOM on top of your already working mods? Big difference between the two. If you are trying (1)FCOM by itself and you are still crashing you've narrowed down your problem to your FCOM installation, which includes a (im)properly configured Bashed Patch. So the next step is start a clean install then add FCOM only. Now ensure FCOM is stable before adding any other mods. If you are doing the second(2) thing I mentioned you're doing it backwards and are still at square one. You need to ensure FCOM works by itself first and foremost. Then you add one mod at a time testing for stability.

If you answered yes to number one (1) above you can ignore the following. Well except the link, I still recommend it as a valuable resource and to assist in setting up FCOM.

As mentioned earlier this is the proper order to get things going... "What you need to do is start with a fresh install, install FCOM, test for at least a few hours for stability with only FCOM installed. Having a stable FCOM can be a task in itself. If that's all well and good then you start adding additional mods one by one, again testing after each." If you need some FCOM guidance then I suggest going to the following site, FCOM: Convergence. It's loaded with info and covers pretty much every angle for a successful FCOM setup.

Sorry about my last un-readable post  .

Anyways, I used Bben's revert to Vanilla post to, well, revert to vanilla. And the news is bad. I reverted to Vanilla Oblivion to test to see if that worked, I went to launch Oblivion through the default .exe (OblivionLauncher.exe) well it got passed the Bethesda Softworks Movie-ette, then it crashed. So I unchecked everything, still crashed :wallbash: ! So Just to see if you can decipher the Error report:

But I think I may well have to re-install oblivion AGAIN  . There goes an hour of my life....

Anyways, if you think there are anyways to save this install of oblivion... (but even I doubt it....) please reply with your hearts content..

Oh, and I think I didn't tell you what OS I've got, Well I've got Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. And I have installed Oblivion to, My documents\ My Games\ Oblivion - Game..

So tell me what you think.

Thanks sooo much

Two things?

Are you using an edited .ini file?

If so replace it with the default and try again.

also:

Do you have any old saves in your My Documents\My Games\Oblivion folder? If so then remove them (Somewhere safe) and try again.

Unsure about what you had to uncheck as the revert to vanilla leaves nothing in the data folder that can be checked except the Oblivion.esm. The SI version leaves in the SI files also , but the only other thing you can uncheck is the ShiveringIsles.esp - which is actually a dummy esp used if you want to switch the SI part off as the SI is actually incorporated into the Oblivion.esm

However, for a complete uninstall and reinstall: Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.

If you're still crashing after what has been mentioned previously all you can do is start over. Like MrJim said though, try a fresh .ini and clean out your save folder as a last resort, back it up of course. If that's a no go then it's time to completely remove Oblivion and start fresh. Just make sure you remove all remnants of Oblivion. I glanced over Ben's article he linked and it appears to cover all bases for a nice clean removal and re-installation.
