Fallout GOTY constant crashing

Hi - downloaded Fallout 3 GOTY from Steam to my new Alienware and have constant crashing problems - opening doors, going into rooms. Its fine when I am out wandering around. But when it crashes the sound is still on in the background, the screen goes back to the Steam Fallout page and I then have to Ctrl+Alt+Del to Task Master where Steam is running but Fallout is not responding.

So far I have only managed about 5 hours play - its driving me mad - the game played perfectly on my old Alienware from the disc. I've tried the disc as well on my new machine and just have the same problems.

My Alienware spec is below:

Alienware AuroraALX Cosmic Black Chassis 1

Intel? Core? i7 Processor 920 (2.66GHz, 8MB cache, 4.8GT/sec) 1

Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit- English 1

McAfee® Security Center 30-Days trial version 1

Dual 1GB ATI® Radeon™ HD 5770 graphics card 1

12GB 1333MHz (6x2GB) Tri Channel Memory 1

2TB Dual Hard Drive Raid 0 "Stripe" (2x1TB - 7200rpm) 1

24X DVD+/- RW Optical Drive (DVD & CD read and write) 1

Integrated HDA 7.1 Dolby Digital Audio 1

Alienware Aurora Resource DVD 1

I am not using STEAM - my sympathies to you - but I had a similar problem with the DVD version GOTY with all the DLCs. I patched my game to 1.7 and that helped. Also apparently FOSE and FOMM (sorry for the alphabet soup) latest versions help a lot. Research and try those. Good luck.

FOSE = Fallout Script Extender, FOMM = Fallout Mod Manger

Good Luck

You're likely experiencing the multi-core freeze that FO3 has become notorious for.

Open up your FALLOUT.ini (not the prefs) and insert the following line under the "General" section:

iNumHWThreads=2

then change:

bUseThreadedAI=0

to:

bUseThreadedAI=1

EDIT: Not sure if the Steam version of the game stores the .ini in the same location, but for non-steam, it's in the Documents\My Games\ Fallout 3
