Hi there folks! o/

I'll get straight to business. I am new to modding, however, I have been pretty intensively learning and I think I have a decent understanding of the basics. I use OBMM, Wyre Bash and BOSS. I use BSA Redirection after I have applied new textures. I have chosen quite a few mods to enhance the game for myself and I really, really want it to work and have follwed all readme's and install instructions to the letter. However, the game crashes all the time so Im turning to the community for help! On top of the mods I also use QTP3 and on a fresh install I tried QTP3 redimized.

These are the mods I have installed in their load order;

I launch the game through Wyre Bash with OBSE checked. Like I said, I also use QTP3 and I have also tried QTP3 redimized on a fresh instal. I installed the texture pack last, after every other mod. One more thing, in my initial install, I also had better cities installed, and seemingly working (between crashes) just fine. But as I was crashing a lot in IC I decided to reinstall, without Better Cities but it didn't stop the crashing. I have also tried running the game without Deadly Combat as I read somewhere that it can cause random CTD's.

I would really, really appriciate some feedback or advice here, and hopefully a one-click solution to my CTD problems!! (here's hoping!)

Thank you in advance to anyone who reads and responds to this post.

*EDIT* The game ALWAYS CTD's at the IC waterfront as you cross the bridge going toward the huts and beggars area.

Hi,

I had the exact Problem with my Game. I'am running FCOM along with Better Cities and a lot of other Stuff.

CTDs nearly every time in IC Waterfront.

For me QTP3 was the culprit, could not use it at all. Maybe it does not like NVidia SLI setups (3xGTX380)

Better Cities runs fine btw and adds much more to the game than QTP3 in my opinion.

Hope this helps a little

Thanks a lot for the respons Alfred!

And it's funny you should mention QTP3, I had a feeling that it might be that mod causing issues last night...

I reinstalled again last night, with the intention of using less mods. It was my final attempt before ditching the idea completely (I have completed Oblivion on Xbox360 so this time it was modded or nothing).

I used Fran's on it's own instead of FCOM. I left out MMM and all the official DLC except Shivering Isles. And finally, I left out QTP3. I did however install Better Cities. I played all night last night without a single CTD, it was great! So far so good at least..

I do have couple of questions however;

- Is there any other reccomended texture overhauls that I could try? I'm not that fussed tbh, but if there is one that is known to be very stable on modded games I'd like to try it. I guess this point is moot as it will depend highly on the mods I use but still :P

- Is it Ok to install the official content mid-game? Thieves Den, Spell Tomes etc.. ( I will ofc install the patches at the same time for these)

Thanks again for any responses!

Instead of batch installing a bunch of mods and hoping they all work together, Install ONE at a time and test each one before trying the next. The time you think you will save by installing a bunch at once will be more than lost in troubleshooting. Even with BOSS which can easily cut your troubleshooting time in half, but is still not perfect.

Recommendations: if you are going to use OOO, Frans and the others, install with FCOM and test before adding any other mods. Wait until everything else works before adding Deadly reflex. And when troubleshooting, remove Deadly Reflex first as it changes a lot of things you would not expect.

Thanks bben.

I did install all mods one by one and check that the game was working after each one. I even copied a fully working FCOM install into a new folder, incase things went bad I could fall back onto that copy I had. (as FCOM was easily the most intensive install)

I am convinced that QTP3 was the mod causing me problems though, I played 2-3 hours last night without a single CTD. Like I said though, on this install I used less mod's, only Fran's on it's own and ofc, no QTP3. I am using Deadly reflexes though, and it seems to be just fine for now. It's a shame that I can't get QTP to work as it looked really great (inbetween crashes :P) I may start adding some smaller texture overhauls once I'm convinced that my game is 100% OK. I was browsing some today, e.g. Koldorns Cave textures, Improved Doors and Flora etc.. that could make things prettier, but on a smaller scale. Maybe I should concentrate more on my work while at work though hehe :)

What kind of video card do you have (specifically I'm interested in how much VRAM it carries)?

Keep in mind that texture packs like QTP3 often have very high resolution textures, which drastically increases the amount of VRAM which is used at any given time. If your video card runs out of VRAM, it will then begin to spill over onto your systems RAM. Normally that's not an issue (other than performance), however Oblivion is coded as a 32bit application, which means that it cannot naturally use more than 2GB of RAM. If it begins to use more than 2GB of RAM, then it will cause the game to instantly crash.

If this is the issue, then a solution to this is to patch the games executable, with the /largeaddressaware flag set in the header. This should take care of that, and allow the game to use more memory without crashing. A couple things to note in the directions supplied with that however, is if you're running Windows 7 then you can ignore the bit about editing the boot.ini file. This is already done by default in Win7. Also because of OBSE, I would advise against changing the name of oblivion.exe. Just make a backup of that file first before you patch it, and everything will be fine.

Also you can try the Redimized version of QTP3. It's visually the same as Qarl's Texture Pack 3, however they have reduced and optimized the textures in order to perform much better.

I have a Geforce 220 1gb gfx card. Not the best I know. 4gb of RAM though and Win 7.

I will for sure try out the /largeaddressaware flag. It sounds like that could be an issue.

I have already tried the redimized QTP3 but I had the same issues.

Thanks a lot for your respnse, I'll let you know how it pans out :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a little update:

I incorperated the /largeaddressaware flag and am now running the game with 0 CTD's. I have QTP3 redimized up and running and several other visual mods. All is running perfect with no crashes. Better Cities, Deadly reflexes and all that other good jazz.

The game is 1000% better than the vanilla Xbox version I played, thanks to the guys above for their help ^^
