porting, permission needed?

I have ported over an armor mod from fallout 3 for my own use. The .esp is entirely my work (not that it took much!), without even referencing the FO3 esp, since armor works differently anyway. Is it cool if I upload the .esp to newvegasnexus for other people to use without permission of the mod's original creator, and just link to the original mod for the models/textures that the esp points to?

I don't see trouble in releasing only the esp (with install instructions) and link to the original.

It would be easier for the user if you get the permission to release the mesh & texture with it but this is in the hands of the original author.

i agree.

Since you don`t upload content someone else has created, but reference (and therefore credit) the original, there should be no hard feelings.

But for ease of use you could ask the authoer for permission to re-pload his textures and models

youst my 2 cts, though :)

Modders like being asked. What if the original modder intends to release a NV version of the FO3 mod? Kinda stealing the guy's thunder, if you know what I mean. I see a lot of FO3 mods being transfered to NV and I don't see a lot of asking going on. That's not nice, even if the mods were open source. Best bet to avoid any hard feelings or goofy forum trouble is to ask before you do it.

EDIT: I've already put an amendment on my mod uploads to avoid this mess. If my work is going to be in NV, I'll be the one to put it there. I'm sure I'm not the only modder who feels that way.

I understand Kendo's point and he certainly has the right to choose to be the one to port his own mods. However, there may be some modders that don't want to or can't port their mods. Or maybe they have so many mods in FO3 that they won't care if you port one over. In any event, you should always get permission to use someones mods.
