Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul installation

Hi

I'm 99% sure that somewhere in this forum there are already topics about my problem but right now I'm really tired of searching.

This is what I did:

I use Windows 7 (64bit)

  • Installed Oblivion GOTY (German)
  • Patched it
  • Installed the unofficial patch (afterwards I could start the game without any problems)
  • Tried to install OOO

First I tried the 1.33 complete install. When I clicked on the "Play" button it seemed the game would load (black screen for one second) but instead of the Bethesda logo appearing I got a CTD. Reinstall didn't help.

So I thought I should try version 1.3 and upgrading it to 1.33. After I installed 1.3 I wanted to upgrade it to 1.32f via ModManager (creating an OMOD etc.) but it tells me the main OOO plugin file couldn't be found (and OMOD doesn't show any OOO-esp files).

So either I failed at following the (crystal clear) installation instructions in both cases or something else is wrong...

I hope you can help me.

When your game crashes that early it usually indicates a Missing Master. You need to post your LO for us to see and double check your installation to ensure all files are present. With the OMOD not properly showing all files I'm willing to bet the OMOD was not properly created or the actual Archive is corrupt and missing files.

Manually extract the archive to a temp folder and check for all files, including a folder called OMOD conversion data.

that is strange.....

when i installed OOO, i got the latest version, and made an OMOD of it

that installation is by far easier, and much better, due to the sub-folders and such

try to install this as an OMOD, and see if this works

Ok, good idea.

What does LO stand for (I'm new to this forum^^)?

I think the OMOD of the 1.32 upgrade was fine (as far as I can tell which doesn't mean that much). The problem was that it couldn't find the 1.3 version at all because the main file was missing. And I installed the 1.3 manually (extracting to temp folder and copying to the oblivion/data folder), not with an OMOD.

LO stands for Load Order, which is the list of all the plugins and masters loaded by the game, in the order in which they are loaded, hence load order

and maybe if you try to install it as an OMOD, it will work, as it has many optional esp files and such, and making an OMOD is usually the safest way to install

Thanks for clearing that up WastelandAssassin. I should have been more clear on what a Load Order is. Sometimes I get caught up and start speaking jargon without realizing that others won't understand a word I'm saying.

it's hard to keep thinking like a noob, or in simple terms

so there is really no harm done

Exactly. As long as I can decipher it with the help of others it's fine ;)

So, Imade an OMOD of 1.33 and it worked (the game started - thanks for that! ). But some meshes are apparently missing now:

  • in the cave at the beginning (where you sneak up on the goblin) there are some yellow "signs" that read "WTF? I'm a missing mesh"^^
  • the female guard that escorts the king misses some bodyparts and everything that is shown (except her head) is purple
  • gold coins don't appear in the inventory (only the name) and when they are lying around they have purple (or red?) rectangles surrounding them
  • potions don't show up in the inventory (only the name)

Also, I Mod Manager tells me that OOO conflicts with some other mod even though the only one I've installed so far is the unofficial patch and the supplemental.

[Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul COMPLETE 1.33.omod] (major conflict)

Data file textures\menus80\icons\armor\cowlofthegrayfox\helmet.dds already exists

Did I screw something up with the unofficial patch?

First of all ignore OBMM's conflict detection warnings. It's utterly useless, pure crap. Ignore it, trust me. I'm going to quote another post I made earlier today about conflicts...

OBMM's conflict detector is rubbish. Just because there is a conflict doesn't necessarily mean it's a problem. There are conflict winners, conflict losers, conflicts that are simply overrides or underrides, and then there are 'bad' conflicts. Usually only the latter, bad conflicts create problems. Read up on THIS PAGE to get an idea about how conflicts work. You'll also want to check into other, more advanced utilities for better conflict detection. TES4Edit is excellent at resolving issues, but it's not for the feint of heart. It's a very complex tool. Just be warned you can seriously damage your game if you do not follow the documentation thoroughly. Always keep backups. This next paragraph offers more information and another utility for mod management and conflict detection and resolution. Read on.

With that said, of course OBMM gave you a RED Conflict. You had manually installed the files therefor OBMM sees those files and realizes it would overwrite them if you installed the mod. Therefor it thinks that's a conflict. In reality they're matching files! But because they share the same name, even though the contents are identical, OBMM thinks this is a problem. See what I mean? Terrible conflict detection. It doesn't even know the files are IDENTICAL. I will give it some credit though, sometimes it will recognize this and you'll get a black box instead. Wrye Bash is much much better of a mod manager and installer. Although some will disagree with me on this. It's more complex but that means more and better options to due multiple tasks. And Wrye Bash is smart enough to know when files are identical and won't falsely label them as conflicts. When real conflicts do arise you have options with Wrye Bash. Sometimes you can merge files to 'work around' the conflicts. You also have an Install Order, much like a load order. This gives you options to customize which files take precedence, in other words "conflict winners."

Some of that quote will not directly apply to you but the talk about conflicts applies.

In your case OOO is the conflict winner of those files and the UOP is conflict loser. This is not a "bad" conflict. You need OOO to overwrite those files to function correctly. To be certain you can always check in TES4Edit or TES4View. TES4View is safer if you're unsure of what you're doing. Since, as the name implies, you're only viewing files. TES4Edit on the other hands actually allows you to manipulate the files.

So to sum that up and repeat myself once more, OBMM conflict detection is pure rubbish. Pay absolutely no attention to it.

Next you're missing meshes, that's made obvious by the "WTF" sign. You're also missing Textures, missing and/or purple - pink objects indicate this. These problems point to improper installation of resources OR Archive Invalidation issues. **Also Windows 7 could be hindering you. Read on!

Have you ever used or updated Archive Invalidation. Read the article I just linked you to to understand what it does and how to use it. OBMM and Wrye Bash both have Archive Invalidation. The best form is BSA Redirection. Early in the article previously linked methods for using BSA Redirection are covered for both mod managers.. Just follow the steps listed.

First you should update or activate BSA Redirection. Now load your game up and see if the issues have been resolved. If not then you're actually missing the necessary resources for those meshes and textures. This points to improper installation of the mod in question. All you can do is reinstall the meshes and textures and ensure you have BSA Redirection activated.

**Note and a very important one. I notice you have Windows 7. UAC, part of Win 7's security does not like alterations to be made to anything within the Program Files directory. So what is the path of your Oblivion install? Your installation location could be the cause of all of your problems with missing files. You would need to install Oblivion outside of Program Files. A folder such as C:\Games\Oblivion works just fine.

Good luck!
