A Prologue

I'm enjoying my time with New Vegas at the moment, but I can't help feel that Obsidian really slipped up by not having a proper introduction for the main plotline (The search for the platinum chip).

Bethesda are usually good at this, giving you a general idea of why you'd want to follow the main plot in the first place, but this is sadly missing in New Vegas. I'm afraid simply saying someone shot you for a thing you had doesn't really cut it. I've noticed a lot of people have a hard time even caring about the chip, after all it's not until much later it's revealed that it might have any importance at all (No spoilers please, I haven’t actually gotten too far yet, but I have a good guess where it's all going).

So I think it would be great if someone could create a sort of prologue for the main quest, before the whole getting shot in the head mess. Here are some examples just to give you an idea:

-You could start out in a Mojave express looking for work in the wild frontier. There's a decent paying job that just opened up, and there's even a guide willing to show you the quickest route to New Vegas. Things are looking up.

(Unfortunately the guide is in fact the Khan working with Benny (Can't recall his name, J-something), and it's much too late by the time you release that something’s wrong...)

-You could stick with the western theme and start out at the family ranch. The whole towns fallen on hard times, and if something isn't done soon then it won't be long before people start to lose their land. Your Father volunteers you to go on this job the towns been scouting for awhile now. It's a simple job... but it'll pay more then enough to secure the towns future.

------

The beauty of these scenarios is they could be as long or as short as you'd be willing to make it. Could be just a room of npc's, or a whole stretch of land with a mini adventure. I unfortunately don't have the free time to learn how to use geck to make this myself, but feel that it would make a great addition to the game. However I would be willing to write up dialogue if anyone’s interested and wants a hand.

At the moment I feel something would be better than nothing... because at the moment we have nothing.

I have to say even though the plotline of New Vegas was nothing special I much preferred it over Fallout 3's "Search for your Daddy and fulfill your Oedipus complex" story.

Also, I believe one of the reasons why Obsidian would give you a simple plotline was to implore the player to do the subquests and explore the world a little. Fallout 3 was largely dependent on you at least getting far into the Plotline, because then you could get GNR's broadcast all over the wasteland, wear Power Armor and enter the Citadel. Things you would definitely want to do for higher levels. Whereas with New Vegas you could simply disregard the plot altogether and do subquests or wander. Just like in older Elder Scrolls titles for instance.
