Make sure you installed the game correctly and that you have the latest drivers for your audio card.

I reinstalled the game and updated the game before I started it again. It still happens. :>)
sleaaels
Do you remember the last mod you installed prior to the sound problem? Reinstalling it will not fix it if its a problem caused by a mod.
RedRocketTM
Uhm... are you using Ren's Beautypack, a part of it or another character changing mod?I just had the same problem, but I could fix it. So if you're using something that changes the look of the standard characters, it might be, that this mod changes the name of the races, so that the game doesn't accept them as playable races, and NPC's won't talk to you. Just try this: - Open Oblivion.esm in your construction set. (This can take up to 5 minutes, depending on your computer)- Go to: Character --> Race (in your menubar)You should now have a list of the races, and their names in the game. Be sure to keep in mind the names in the right column, or write them down.- Click ok.- Now go to File --> Data again, mark Oblivion.esm, as well as your character changing mod. (for example Ren's Beautypack) and then click on "set as active file", confirm.- Now you have to check Character --> Race again. If the names (right column) of the races now have another name than before, you have to go to "text file" in your small window's menubar while you marked the race you want to change per mouse. Now you change the racenames to what they should be. (What you kept in mind or wrote down.)- Click okay, and do NOT forget to SAVE your Data before you exit CS.- Done, now sound should work fine again. And don't worry, you can't really do it wrong, it's really simple. And even if it wouldn't work for you, you won't change something that would cause the game crash or something like that, so there's no danger. ^^
o0stet0o
I know this is a little late in the day, but if like me you only recently encountered the problem then this is worth it. Ok had the same problem, and it just happened out of the blue. I had not installed anything (mods, drivers, updates etc) and it just started happening. Through a little digging a found a 'solution' to another audio problem that i was encountering. This solution didn't solve the problem it said it would but did solve this problem!! Right, what worked for me was to delete the Spiro audio codec. Goto Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices -> click on Hardware tab -> select Audio Codecs -> click properties (it might take a couple of secs to open) then simply click on the Spiro codec and then remove it. Hope that helps others with same problem. Admin - do you think we could get a sticky for common audio problems?
