MCBM
Hello all. I have this problem with playing Oblivion. Some time ago [ something like two years ] I played Oblivion for the last time. Recently, a month ago I wanted to play again. So I installed it, and as soon as I launched it [ with no mods ] it crashed. So I asked at bethsoft for help but they didn't know what the problem was so I asked ATi [ I have the 5860 HD Radeon ] and no help from there either. So does anyone know how I can fix this? Any help would be much appreciated. Here are my PC specs in case they are needed Processor: Intel® Core2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.9GHzMemory: 4096MB RAMVideo Card: ATI Radeon HD 5870Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.091207-1941)Motherboard: Some Gigabyte thingy xD NOTE : Since last time the game worked I have changed my Video Card and my OS. Thanks. MCBM
Smooth613
Where exactly does it crash? When showing the Bethsoft credits at the very start? Or does it make it to the main menu? Crashing immediately usually indicates missing master files. Before you hit play make sure there is an X beside Oblivion.esm (Master File). If there is no X click on it to put one there, then play. You also should ensure that you have the most recent patch for your version of Oblivion. You can get the official patches at The Official Site, Elderscrolls.com. If none of that works I suggest a complete uninstall and reinstall to eliminate the chance of a corrupt install. I suggest you use Bben's Reinstall Procedure. Make sure you take note in the reinstall section about Win 7.

I am sorry for the extremely late answer but I dint find myself enough time online in the first days due to responsibilities in school and afterwards I completely forgot about it. The game crashes after the first bethesda logo shows up, at the first loading screen, so it doesnt even make it to the main menu. I have tried to mark oblivion.esm but nothing happens. Since I have bought the original copy of GOTY and used in in the past as well, I will assume that everything as far as the installation process is concerned is in order. The game is patched to the latest version and I have also followed your suggestion and reinstalled using the instructions on the page you linked. Since then no driver of ATi's has managed to correct the issue. If any further assistance can be given, I would be grateful. Thanks,MCBM Edited January 10, 2011 by MCBM
Qwaxalot
Exit Oblivion, then try renaming or deleting the oblivion.ini file (...\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini)

Smooth613
[...] The game is patched to the latest version and I have also followed your suggestion and reinstalled using the instructions on the page you linked.[...]I'm glad you have everything sorted out and working now. However you did not properly follow the guide or you would have been rid of the old Oblivion.ini, the one you just deleted, upon un-installation. Why am I pointing this out? It's only a reminder that you need to follow steps exactly and pay attention to detail. If you skip any steps, regardless of how minor you think they are, you're allowing the possibility for error. As you've just noticed. Good luck in your further Oblivion endeavors!
