Crashing when going outside.

These workarounds you mention from other sites sound like bandaids to the real problem. It sounds like you've received advice to alter the .ini to force shadows. Well that's not going to help if the selected shader can't handle those settings. Read on.

I suggest you run the Oblivion Launcher.exe and manually set the settings to Very High. It will probably auto-detect Medium, or even Very Low, ignore that and bump it up to Very High. This will force the game to use a different shader package. Since you mention shadow troubles earlier, I suspect this is the cause. I'm willing to bet on it actually. Since the backup .ini works this indicates something screwy happens when you alter it. Keep a backup but delete the .ini from Documents\My Games\Oblivion so a new one will be created upon startup with the new shaders. It's possible that you were trying to force shadows in game that the shader couldn't handle, therefor crashing the game.

I have an ATI 5770 and Oblivion doesn't recognize it and auto-detects to Very Low. If you're familiar with the command TLB, Toggle Lite Bright, that's what it looks like, atrocious. Reason being, it confuses the 5770 with the ancient Nvidia FX 57xx cards which are barely capable of running Oblivion. So therefor it wrongly assigns the incorrect shader package, and sets all settings ridiculously low. You can't fix this by manually changing settings in game because your card is using the wrong shaders. You have to run the Oblivion Launcher.exe and change the setting to Very High. This corrects the issues and the game will use the proper shader package. I think this will apply to your card also. Any card that was made after official support for Oblivion was ceased either defaults to Meduim or below, wrongfully assigning shader packages.

still no dice. and now the screen is black as well, even on a new game... but i have all the interface stuff available...i walked around actually to get outside... and when i went outside, it still crashed. I've been doing this ini and shadow editing because i was getting a black screen. Renaming the shader package it wanted and then replacing it with the best one actually worked in getting video, but regardless i cannot go outside. oh, and a change i just made to a earlier post, which may be useful

and if i try to set 1 to use shadows on grass, or any other shadow setting, it Doesn't work... and i do put it on read only after i do so.

This sounds more like a hardware deficiency, or failure, than anything. I see in your OP that you are using 2 4870's which should be overkill for this game but all the symptoms you describe point to hardware deficiency. Possible driver issue.

When the 2D images, menu and UI, render fine, but 3D objects have problems this indicates insufficient hardware. It's very common for the tutorial dungeon to work but the game crashes in the wilderness when using insufficient hardware.

It's possible your card is failing. How do other games play? Do you actually have the ATI 4870 X2 or do you have 2 separate cards in Crossfire?

I have the 4870x2 (dual chip 1 card), and it works on other games just fine. Hot running card, but i keep it cool manually if i have to. Any heat problem i have ever had completely freezes windows. I can run Crysis and any other game on ultra high with no problems. So... yeah... and as i stated, it could likely be that the drivers themselves no longer support the game properly. I used to play this all the time before i installed new drivers. Additionally, i have tried fixing it with DNA drivers with no luck. I don't even know if its possible to revert to old graphics drivers. Since i have only installed 1 driver package for my card as of now (reformatted), there is no way to revert aside from completely uninstalling the device and clicking delete drivers. Which, then doesn't even work because the drivers are still saved in the windows cache (regardless of clicking delete). They would have to be removed manually out of the directory, even if i knew the name of the ini and dll. After then, i would be able to install older ati drivers.
