WuphonsReach Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 There's also been some talk of a bug between VATS and real-time with regards to shotgun damage, especially if you're using pellet/buckshot type loads (NxM damage numbers where you have N projectiles that do M damage). Apparently they do more damage in VATS or in real-time (I've forgotten which way it was working). Slugs are fairly effective, but the weapons as a whole are simply not as powerful as they were in FO:3 because of damage threshold (DT) in FO:NV. In FO:3, a shotgun blast would do massive damage as each individual projectile hits (and critical chance was calculated individually?). In FO:NV, the DT calculation bleeds a majority of that damage off on non-slug shotgun ammo. So I think the general weakness is a possible change in how crits are calculated combined with the introduction of DT. Save your shotguns for CQB against unarmored opponents, or switch to slugs. Even then, there are better finishing weapons that do more DAM per shot.
quads Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Is it worth taking the Shotgun Surgeon/Cowboy perks? I'm at level 22 so not many choices left..if you like using shotguns, the surgeon perk is very nice.
WuphonsReach Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 if you like using shotguns, the surgeon perk is very nice.Oh goodness yes. On my next play through I'm going to take that perk as early as possible. I recently upgraded from a lever action shotgun (20ga) to a hunting shotgun (12ga), the 7 shot does more like 8 damage per shot instead of about 5 and it rips up Cadazors. The weapon is darned expensive (there are a few laying around) but the 12ga shotguns are very nice. I still think weapons need to be re-balanced on the whole, but I'm waiting to see if Obsidian does that.
