Make companions less effective?

After trying out one of those "Unlimited Companion" mods I quickly noticed - Companions seem way more effective in NV than FO3. Boone was my first humanoid companion and it absolutely *shocked* me how much he kicked ass. By the time I took down one Bighorn, he'd just downed his 3rd. Even with the Boone nerf mod, there's no head within half a mile's sight that he can't pop. Then came Veronica, who shows just how scarily effective Power Fists are now (especially since I just found Pushy). Then came Gannon, Lily, Rex, ED-E, Cass........now I have a makeshift platoon that'd make the Rangers envious, and I'm not even 30 yet. Basically, if something wants me dead and gets too close, they're on it before I even see them, and the threat is dead by the time I get a clear shot.

Now I know that its obvious that I shouldn't have so many, since its so unbalancing. It does help to keep them around in case something triggers extra quests from them and such. But with even just half a dozen of them, they tear up everything aside from more than a couple Deathclaws at a time. Even if it were just ED-E, Rex & Boone, I'd have a huge advantage. Sure, I could go it alone, as it was in the beginning. Thats a lot of extra "bag space" to lose, though. And I'm quite the pack rat. Hmm.

So is there any way to weaken the damage output of most followers across the board? In my opinion, its great to have helpers and backup, but my concern is that the responsibility to get stuff done in combat should still largely be up to you. Any thoughts?

Sorry for the "necro-posting", but I'm fully agree with topic-starter. I've equipped Boone with 10-mm pistol & walk to deathclaw near Slown - just wanted to see, how fast Boone will take the monster out. After 5-6 shots the deathclaw was dead! 5-6 shots from a weak 10-mm pistol! It's simply not interesting =(

+1, the same question. Modders, help please!

nothing you can do about it really but limit yourself to one companion and maybe rex or ed-e at the most

it helps to stick with non stock companions (i like the Eve companion) and then you can take all weapons away from them which gives you a chance to get into the fight but they will pick up weapons from dead enemies so keep taking those away from them (i do use Veronica because she has no default guns but can save my azz if a deathclaw surprises me)

i have concluded the game was structured to be played without companions, either that or they were meant to be used only for a single quest or something but even with just one companion it ended up being like a cheat and the unlimited companion mod is a nice change to gameplay but you quickly become nothing but a spectator watching them play the game.

you can switch over to hardcore mode but they will just suck your supplies dry and IMO you switch from playing the game to spending ALL your time supplying what THEY need not to mention wet nursing them health wise constantly is a PITA

no solution i tried works well to let me play with close to the no companion style and feel to the game and nerfing them is IMO just going to screw up the game with those unintended side effects to the balance of things caused by mods that mess with things like that.

EDIT: as for the pack rat part, just use the added carry weight mod for that and use a drop location to bring it all too (and sell junk often)

@webster63: you're right in all things. All companions are like terminators, even on low levels. But you need to use them, if you want to complete all the quests of them (such as ED-E quest or Boone quest & so on). I've found some king of solution - you can use the mod "Correction:Passive", switch your companion's activity mode to Passive & they will do nothing in combat - even being attacked & surviving pain, they'll be staying still. I'm using ED-E as a personal "carry-box" & all shooting job i'm doing alone.

So if you want to walk with companions & complete their quests, but don't wanna them to shoot anyone, just use "Correction:Passive" mod. It's not good solution, but it works =/

well i see no point in having them as passive just to be pack mules when you can just as easy port to a drop location when you get loaded and the extra carry weight mod makes this easier for you and the more the game must control (as in your companions) the less resources it has for doing other things so it must slow things down somewhat (cpu, ram, or video card) fps wise when you add companions

anyway you decide to play, it seams like doing ALL the quests just doesnt work out for ya especially when you realise some quests will make others unavailable or impossible so its designed that way to randomise the quests you do or dont do and i kinda find (for me anyways) it helps make the game feel and be different each time which is i think was the idea when they designed the game.

i have settled on if you want the quests then get the companions as needed to do the quests then let the companions go after completed quests so you avoid them messing up the games dificulty feeling and usually you only need the benefit each companion brings just for that related quest anyways
