Saves Started Crashing, Game Won't Load - Any Hope To Redeem?

First of all, after a brief stint a while back I've been just getting back into Oblivion inside the past week, and a lot of the resourcefulness I had back then is pretty much vanished.. So forgive me if the solution is obvious.

So, I've been downloading mods like crazy, usually keeping safe and downloading and installing 1-2 at a time to prevent potential messes(Yes, I use OBMM). I've also been keeping save files generally 30 mins to hours apart. All of that recently betrayed me, and now I'm looking at every single save file(only about 6...) crashing, even the auto save back in the prison/sewer when I only had about 4-5 mods. The most recent mods I installed were DMC Style, the dual wield addon for it, and Deadly Reflexes. I installed them in that order. After it crashed I turned them off in reverse order, followed by the 2-3 addons before that, and so on until I had the bare minimum of addons left enabled. Not even then would the level 1 autosave load. Actually, *breaking news* not even a new game will load. I still have the unofficial patch, aos ai race, ren's, darnified UI, and hgec going.

Also, for the record, I tried using BOSS. No go. First was the issue with the BOSSLog.txt not being there, which for whatever reason I was left to create on my own after looking around the web for a while, then BOSS didn't have permission to modify changes, so I gave "BATCH" full control of Oblivion folder.. But after the exe runs BOSS.bat just opens my empty BOSSLog and that's it. Idk if BOSS would help at this point but.. for the future it would be nice.

So, there's your task. Should I work on getting my saves back or just uninstall and start a new game..

Well if BOSS is having permission problems then I have to assume Oblivion is also experiencing the same issue. I am going to assume you are on Win 7 and have Oblivion and utilities installed in the default directory, Program Files. Correct? UAC does not like any files attempting to access or alter anything within the Program Files directory. Therefor treating any such action as malicious, shutting it down immediately. I strongly suggest you reinstall to an alternate location outside the realms of UACs control. C:\Games\Oblivion will do just fine.

No I cannot explain why it worked temporarily, I can only suggest a way to ensure it doesn't happen in the future.

Thanks for your reply. Do you think it's at all related to the mods I recently installed and/or their load-order? Yes and yes to both of your questions, however I'd like to get maybe one more opinion before I take that dreaded step.

Also, if I do reinstall in a different location, is there any way I'd be able to save all the mods I've downloaded or will I have to download them all again? Just wondering if I'll be able to keep the contents of my Data folder in its current state.

bump and update..

i recently uninstalled oblivion. i also uninstalled obmm and deleted all of the mods. i made a fresh collection of mods i wanted and reinstalled in C. i kept my save files but so far i haven't had a chance to test them out. i downloaded the newest patch but it kept getting stuck at 0% and i'd have to end-program it. after that didn't work a couple more times i went ahead and opened oblivion, only to have it crash after playing the bethesda intro whatever-you-call-it movie. i uninstalled and reinstalled again, this time onto the desktop. tried immediately starting a game after installation completed but it still crashed at the load screen before hitting the main menu. i uninstalled again. i looked through the registry and there was no sign of oblivion. the old folder in program files is long gone, and i just now deleted the saves folder in my docs. about to try reinstalling again i think..

any ideas?

edit: after reinstalling a third time i can load the game to the main menu and start a new game. apparently those few files in the my docs folder were crashing it...? does that give anyone any leads as to the root cause of this mess? currently installing the patch. i think i'm ok from here but i'm still curious as to the problem that lead me to all this.

Your Oblivion.ini file, which stores many configuration settings, is located in your Docs\My Games folder. Yes that can cause problems if it's not generated by the new installation. When uninstalling Oblivion you should always delete any and all configuration files, such as Oblivion.ini. If any setting within that file is messed up you'll experience problems. Since you're just carrying over the problem to a new install.
