help on RAM

Sorry to jump in your thread, but is it true Oblivion needs a clear 512mb to run correctly ? many thanks if you can humor me on this !!! :D

Honestly..?

I wouldn't try to run this game with less than 2 gigs.

Oh... I know you CAN run it with less, but not without shutting off almost every visual enhancement in the game and/or heavily tweaking the Oblivion.ini file.

My advice to all gamers is this: the future standard, so far as minimum system memory is concerned, is going to end up being in the 2 to 3 gigabyte range before much longer. It's not super-critical yet, but between new releases and also... Windows Vista... I'd start thinking seriously about hardware upgrades if your system currently falls short of that mark.

I'm running with 768 here. It works, but not very well. It often uses virtual memory as well, which boosts the memory to 3029. Oblivion needed quite some optimisation before I could use the distant land without too much loading time.

Ok so i need 2 gig but my computer has only 2 memory ports internal, i have 1 x 512 SD DIMM 133 already. I have been searching but i cant find any 1gig modules in that format ! why is that or am i being dumb ? This is the last on my list as i now have a GeForce 7800gs and a X-FI Extreme Gamer sound card, WOW that really helped !!!. Do i need to use the same format memory, if so where do i get them ? Please Help !!!

I could be wrong, but I don't think PC133 mem sticks come any larger than 512 megs. They *might* be available as high as 1 gig each, but I don't think I've ever seen any. Granted, I haven't really looked for them, either.

Check with a good online store, like TigerDirect or Newegg.

To Povuholu: keep in mind that when I give advice on various components and specs for Oblivion, I'm usually telling people what I think would be as close to optimal as is reasonable. Yes, you can run the game with less-than-ideal hardware, but my advice is usually aimed at steering people towards a better gaming experience... and that usually involves an upgrade or two for a lot of folks. This game is a ballbuster, when it comes to its ideal hardware requirements. That's why Oblivion regularly crashes on so many systems.

Ok it was me being a dumb'ass, unfortunately im dealing with DELL so i got the wrong info, i have a dimension 4550 and it actually takes DDR SDRAM and can only take 2 x 512mb apparently ? is that because of the motherboard ? If so im going to settle with 1gig and live without grass he he !!! That should run it well enough i hope ?

Your advice is well appreciated tessera.

Grass is annoying anyway. Just gets in the way. While I could probably have grass active with no performance hit, I keep it disabled in the .ini.

I actually have a dimension 4550 as well. Indeed, there are only two ram slots.

I currently have one 1GB stick installed. Previously, I was using two 256MB sticks. It runs acceptably with 512MB, if by "acceptably" you mean "Keep the graphics on mid/low, and grab a book while it loads". Despite what I've heard some stay, it's perfectly stable with 512MB, as long as the graphics are at a reasonable level.

I'm aware of that already. That's why I'm not going to upgrade mine, I'm going to get a custom build later as well.
