Damage And Dps questions

it's not damage and damage per shot... those would be the same thing

it's damage (which is for each single round fired)

and DPS which is damage per second (Damage multiplied by rounds fired per second or the firerate)

Yes, damage is the amount of damage the weapon will do, and DPS is the average amount of damage the weapon will do over one second of continuous fire.

However, there are many things to consider as well, such as the different ammo types (not just AP or HP, but also the bullet type itself, like .50 cal or .308), and the resistances certain enemies will have to certain types of ammo and guns. A gun may say it will do a great deal of damage, but that may not always be the case.

An example would be the Sniper Rifle and the Hunting Rifle, both of which use the same type of ammo (.308), but a Hunting Rifle will not do as much damage to a Super Mutant as a Sniper Rifle will. Another would be the 10mm Pistol and the 10mm Submachine Gun. The Pistol will do hardly anything to a Cavador, but a Submachine Gun will tear them apart quickly.

The new game mechanic in terms of how one gives and takes damage is the DT modifier. Here is a post by a modder I dug up on the Bethesda forums. Damage Resistance was what Fallout 3 used, Damage Threshold is what Vegas uses....

"For example, let's say we have a weapon that does 20 points of damage. Against a DR of 20%, it would do 16 damage (DR it reduces damage by 20%). Now, against a DT of 20, it would do 0 damage (as DT reduces damage by a flat 20 points). But in practice, engine will allow some little damage (1 or something)

DT is very important thing in New Vegas, cos it allow to create some armors, which will practically ignore damage from low-grade weapons. In fallout 3 this goal can be accomplish through the scripts only and not without immersion breaks"
