[Idea] Self-Contained Lasers

After seeing JaySuS convert the Laser RCW into a Tommy Gun (JaySuS Tommy Gun), it made me wonder:

 

Would it be possible to make self-contained-laser ammunition?

 

As in, you have a "round" which instead of gunpowder and a bullet, it has a micro-battery and laser emitter. It'd be one use (The battery and emitter would be burned-out), but act the same was as a laser weapon, thus turning any gunpowder weapon into a makeshift laser weapon.

 

Maybe a weapon mod would be required? (Chromed barrels, or something to that effect?). Of course, I have no idea if the game/script engine will even allow this, but I thought I would throw the idea out there.

So you want a bullet type that fires lasers. Don't forget to have plasma rounds and tesla rockets.

I dont see why it couldn't be done, the idea sounds plausible but you have to remember that using a "micro battery" it would have to hold enough energy to make the laser its emitting powerful enough to do damage...otherwise you've just got a flashing laser pointer...at least if your lore or realism freak otherwise anything plausible. Mini Nuclear batteries?

The thought crossed my mind, which is why I was thinking that the stats would be something like:

Damage: x0.5

Spread: x0.5

Penetration: x4

Wear: x2

I'm just kinda throwing numbers around though. Essentially, it'd be weak. Because as you said, the batteries wouldn't be very powerful. And it'd cause greater wear. But the bonus would be pin-point accuracy and high armor penetration. But if someone can think of a better way to balance it, that'd be great. I've never been great at figureing out proper balancing. Kinda like beefed up AP rounds, I guess.

But sure, I don't see why Plasma rounds couldn't be included. Possibly act like HP rounds on steroids that also increase wear.

And I remember the Tesla Rockets from back in Fallout Tactics. Devastation towards robots!

There is no reason for the lasers, plasma, ect to be weaker on account of batteries. Sure, they may be smaller, but you are discharging the ENTIRE battery, negating any weakness.

A much smaller battery. Without any focusing arrays, from a weapon that's just not designed to do it. You know the big boxy laser rifle? Know why it's boxy? It's filled with focusing crystals and an emitter. Sure there's those 'laser' sights and pens, but their power output is nominal, I'd be more worried about someone armed with a stapler than any laser device that size, at least for a few millenia... Hell, how'd you cycle the rounds like that in an automatic? you'd have to manually re-cock it and de-chamber the spent device each time you fired... They'd either be useless or silly.

Perhaps you'd only be able to use them in the revolvers?. That'd give kind of a weird, cool 'sci-fi western' feel to the whole deal. But yeah, I've thought about these kind of rounds and if they would work and how to implement them. It seems like it's be easy enough through the GECK....then again, I've said that plenty of times right before the start of 3-hour-long painful trial-and-error sessions

When I read the topic title I thought you were asking for something that was akin to a laser version of a disposal single shot weapon, not laser based munitions for 'normal' weapons. Still, nice idea. Some man ammo specialist could have concocted a way to make it work in game and is selling batches of their works to those that could afford them.

 

Hope you don't think I'm hijacking (if so, let me know and I'll start a new thread on this). I just wanted to outlay what sprung into my head when I read the title (hadn't read the actual topic at this point).

 

What I had in mind: A small hand held unit that you'd get one short, but powerful blast from and then have to toss it away as it's charge would be spent. Could be used as a 'holdout' or possibly a stun weapon. Battery\charge pack housed within the grip, firing emmiter and focus lens taking up the rest of the frame.

 

Think a throwaway laser deringer. Something like the item in the image below, but with a few visual alterations obviously.
