[Idea] Self-Contained Lasers

True. The thought did cross my mind. But I figured that, as Lt Albrecht mentioned, the weapon lacks all the focusing arrays and such, thus leaving a lot of the oomph out of the equation. That, and for balance.

The cycling problem never even crossed my mind until now, and I thank you for bringing it up. Maybe only allow it in bolt-actions and revolvers as Geeves83 mentioned. As for the power thing, perhaps only allow it for larger calibers. .45-70, .50, 12.7mm. Maybe the .308/7.62mm and .223/5.56mm as well.

That's an interesting idea. Although I'm not sure how exactly the "disposable" thing would work, if the engine would even allow something like it. Possibly make it reloadable, but take a long time. But it'd pack a massive punch.

 

Edit: So, after taking a look at how ammunition types and such are done, it doesn't look like it'd be hard at all to make it fire the laser or plasma projectiles. Even has it's own drop-down menu in fact! Maybe I'll go ahead and see if I can make something of it.

About the focusing array, other things that effect output - Think of it this way, could a standard Laser Rifle/Plasma Rifle with max charged microfusion cells be configured to overload and fire a shot that could blow a hole in a tank, destroying themselves in the process?

 

If you think the answer is yes, then the rounds should be able to have about the same damage as the real thing.

 

If no, then the rounds would be to weak to be useful, they need a gimmick.

 

As for cycling, why not just strap a bit of gunpowder on the rounds to move them, or addon a fission battery and some parts to the gun to move the bullets in and out?

Decided to break down and just make the mod myself. Almost seems like they had something like this in mind, what with the projectile field in the ammunition tables. I'll get around to it tomorrow after some sleep.

True, and noted. Maybe I'll just make multiple versions: One with more-or-less equivalent damage to proper energy weapons, and another weakened version. Choice is always good, right? And maybe a third version which is just outright over-charged just for shits and giggles.

 

As for addons, that's part of why I mentioned chromed barrels in the first post. Maybe a mod would be required to make it work (Or work more efficiently). Have some sort of mod that cycles the weapon using an external battery or something. That'd be a required mod for (semi)automatic weapons, and something along the line of an optional chromed barrels mod which would reduce the weapon wear that using energy shells causes. Although both of these would possibly require modeling, which I know nothing about.
