Bernt
I've played NV since it came out. Now I've installed it on my new win 8.1 pc and I've played with my usual lvl 50 character for a while.Tonight I wanted to start a new game. But as soon as Benny fires - or before - the game crashes.I can load an old save and play on. But no new character. I have tried deleting the .ini and verifying the game cache. It says I am missing one file and that it will be downloaded. It says that over and over again!I've tried loading a backup .ini too. But no luck.Uninstalled "raptr" too as I saw some had problems with that program.
Nimboss
Strange! I have a laptop with win 8.1 installed Steam and FONV 1/2 year ago. Tonight I fired that up to see if I got the same issue, but it works like a charm...You get the same crash if you jump the intro movie? Since you say new win 8.1 PC do you have a 4k monitor also? Might be a resolution issue, just a suggestion.
Bernt
No 4K here. I'm running 1920x1080 on my new 23". My VGA should be able to manage 4k but according to reviews it'd be hard pressed.I have tried sitting through the whole movie - and just hitting escape when the moon shows up. The roulette wheel starts spinning and then after a few seconds it crashes. Odd thing is that there are no problems if I load an old save. I can play for hours with no problems. I have tried moving all of my saves to another folder just to see if my save folder had grown too big. If it can at all!Just started up this morning and I still get the same message when trying to verify the cache. "One file is missing and will be downloaded" - which it doesn't! Wondering if I should make a backup of my data folder and reinstall. Would be a hassle but.........
Nimboss
Hi Bernt! Did you get it solved? I was empty of more ideas and hoped others with win 8.1 would drop in with solutions. Actually it feels lot people are active some where else for the last weeks. If you have space and all the time for it, backup and resync with steam should do it. If not, well then you really have a nasty one to solve. I have updated my laptop with win 8.1 today with all available MS updates (just one off, seems to be time out on MS side). No probs to start new game. However this install is vanilla without any mod organizer or NVSE or plugins at all. Since I at the time wanted to see if the laptop could handle NV in HD at all. Regarding sync with steam and "one file missing...." I think I got that too on other machines, no difference in running the game however. Some stuff are saved in the game saves regarding graphics, might be that for a vanilla game start if you run lot of enhancers (ENB) those settings is only possible to save/restore on an already existing game load? Just gripping after straws here.. Actually, I think you might have a mod running that the creator missed to test how it works when starting a new game from scratch. I can only tell of own experience but most mods I created was made and tested with a character some level and a bit in game already.Could that be it? Bernt
Hi Nimboss Yeah - I got it solved. Though not as elegant as I would have wanted. I reinstalled the game and loaded the mods all over - and got the exact same problem.Finally......... I started to think  I unchecked all the mods and started a new game. No problem. I guess one of my mods prevents me from starting all over. And - without having tried it yet- I would not be surprised if it is a mod that allows me to play on after finishing the game. CAGE - Continue After Games Ending. I haven't tested it yet. But is seems logical to me. Phew - if only I had thought of that BEFORE uninstalling Steam :wallbash: Thanks for your feedback  Cheers - Steff
Nimboss
Hi! Good to know you at least got it to work again! And yeah! with all loose files having an old game setup running with all these myriads of tweaks and fixing to get it work and suddenly get stomped is not the funniest things to face. I think my last backup to start from scratch took 40 minutes and that was done with at least semi pro hardware. I still not have all mods and tweakings running from the old setup. Well at least for ever new iteration you can make it more stable and robust.
