[WIP] Feeding the Beast (first quest/companion mod)

Starting this topic up now in hopes that I can get feedback and assistance as I progress, as well as to keep myself motivated.

------------------------------------

"Feeding the Beast" is a quest mod designed to reintroduce raiders as less of a 'pest' faction, and more of a serious threat. More specifically, the mod will be centered on the Jackals.

(Considering the number of people that populate the Mojave wasteland, you'd think the Jackals would eventually fall under the leadership of someone capable of delivering them from their squalor.)

Without giving too many spoilers, the plot is as follows:

An ex-tribal, Asger, and a ghoul sharpshooter, Seamus, travel the Mojave as headhunters, tracking down and eliminating targets for various individuals, no matter how shady. When they aren't on a job, they keep themselves sharp by wrecking raider ambushes on unsuspecting caravans.

After killing one too many Jackals, the new leader decides to take action. He learns of Asger's former tribal affiliations, and leads his band of marauders to take control of her homeland, pillaging and murdering to break them down.

The Courier recruits Asger and Seamus, whether on a whim or through curiosity, and eventually joins them in retaking Asger's homeland, all the while walking straight into the mouth of the beast himself.

------------------------------------

So, yeah, it's kind of a crude description, and doesn't even begin to capture what I have in mind for the finished product.

I intend for FtB to contain:

  • Somewhere between 1-2 hours of gameplay (don't want to get too ambitious, since it's my first mod)
  • Custom companion weapons (meaning edited stats AND textures)
  • Custom-ish armors (I'll be piddling around with nifskope, no promises though)
  • New Jackal enemies with varied strengths and abilities
  • A shitton of profanity
  • A look into the mind of a psychopath (maybe, I'm not exactly an expert on sociology (I don't even think that's the right word, oh god))
  • Plenty of fun references to tickle your brain box
  • Lots of parenthesis
  • Totally clever dialogue with some pretty extreme player options (probably not)

I'll be posting periodically to share my progress!

Screens of Asger and Seamus.

Temporary armors using Dragbody's First Recon resource > http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/49511/?

Weapon retextures are good for now, I suppose. My system can't handle high resolution, so the textures might not be that beautiful, and I'm sorry for that. Asger's axe, Mockingbird, has marks where she's killed high priority targets. Seamus' rifle is a recolored sniper rifle affectionately coined, 'Headbanger', and I'm not sure whether to leave it as is or add to it.

Retexture for Asger's axe, and a wip texture for the homemade 9mm.

I've begun the process of starting up the quest. I'm planning for the action to kick up almost immediately, but I'm running into a snag where a triggered message box keeps repeating itself. Looks like I might have to switch it up and forget about that trigger altogether.

Main speaking roles as of right now: (all accents are going to be neutral for now)

Asger, 20's-30's (I doubt I'll be able to find a voice actor who can pull off anything more mature)

----------

Asger grew up with the Conchords, a small tribe that matured under the influence of the Followers of the Apocalypse. Together with Seamus, she makes a living as a headhunter; more often than not, her targets are unarmed civilians. She's hotheaded in battle, and wields her axe like a demon straight out of hell. [Caucasian, female, neutral accent]

Seamus

----------

Seamus is former drug addict who, before teaming with Asger, made a living raiding caravans. Ironically, after getting clean, he put his sharpshooting skills to use by escorting caravans through faction territory; now, he and Asger take various bounties, never bothering to question their legitimacy. He's cocky and has an overinflated ego, but tends to be the voice of reason. [Ghoul, male, neutral accent]

Cale, 40's-50's

----------

Cale is an intimidating figure who united most of the broken-up pockets of Jackals strewn throughout the Mojave. He lives for chaos and disorder, and revels in bending others to his will. Selfish and sardonic, Cale thinks of himself as a god amongst the inferior minds of the Jackals. He is the current Jackal leader. [Caucasian, male, neutral accent]

As an update, I believe I've finalized the homemade 9mm textures, and have started on the worldspace. My only problem is that it's fairly massive, and I'm worried that trying to render the LOD is just going to fail. I've tried once, and the GECK just got stuck where it was for hours on end. I'm just not sure whether I should start over or not.

Also, the only way I know to get a normal map is to just create it in photoshop. Hopefully it isn't completely terrible as a finished product.

As a side note, I'm going to be getting down into details as much as possible, even going so far as to change eye colors for different characters. Which basically means I'm going to be slowing myself down even more. Fantastic.

Looks good. Someone putting a lot of detail and care into a modesty sized mod fills me with a LOT more confidence than those who promise the moon (and deliver, at best, a moon rock.)

Thanks for the comment, Corwin. I agree, there's been a lot of that on the Nexus and it's very disheartening.

As a first time mod, I just hope mine ends up being as good as I think it can. Thanks again!
