Many choices we make in our everyday life has to do with our beliefs, things taught to us, learned or not,How do you play an Rpg?According to your beliefs OR as a completely different person.(perhaps for variety's sake)

P.s. US English not my native tongue.Pls forgive any mistakes.(Although with my history i should be banned for making any mistakes whatsoever.I'm an English teacher in my country... :whistling: )

I play according to my beliefs and morals, but having said that the mood I'm in does play a part in the game eg someone I might have used persuasion on in the last game, I might kill this time due to anger or lack of patience caused by something that has happened during the day.

I can't change who I am for a game and I have tried. I have experimented for example, killed Flemeth because I wanted to see her as a dragon and I killed the high dragon when doing the Urn quest because I wanted to know how hard it would be to kill, but I've only done that once. In case it's of any interest, I don't kill Flemeth because what ever her reasons if it wasn't for her I wouldn't be alive, I feel I owe her and the high dragon I don't kill simply because I like dragons and as long as it doesn't bother me I won't bother it.

My characters end up being a cross between what I wouldn't want to be but sometimes fantasize about and what I aspire to be. I'm just an average schmuck that goes to work every day, comes home and plays the game; the character is larger than life. In most cases he is on the side of good but his methods can be questionable; I've never played a truly evil character, I'm not capable.

I have killed Flemeth, right up until I realized how ungrateful that made the character and never did it afterward, high dragon dies every time as we can't have the beastie ravaging the countryside - I consider it a public service. My characters will sometimes be randy little polygamists that have sex with multiple partners and engage in mini-orgies, sometimes they will be monagamistic and occasionally will not engage in romance at all. I've killed Zevran once, only because I wanted to do the final battle with a party of only four (to bypass the 2nd Denerim gates battle,) otherwise I try to find his good side. Ser Landry I go about 50/50 sometimes giving the misguided fool the battle he wants and other times saving him from himself. I have never defiled the ashes; desecrating a religious icon is just wrong no matter who's religion it is. I always seem to be concerned about the ratio of people killed vs. darkspawn killed and I do not much care to have the death count on the people side being higher than the darkspawn side but the game itself makes that difficult to avoid. I always try to help those I encounter rather than ridiculing or blowing them off; I've never walked away from the people of Redcliffe but I have played Connor every way imaginable due to the moral ambiguity of the situation.

In summary, my characters are a lot like me in some respects and completely unlike me in many others. It's a game, and to a point fantasy can override reality without leaving one with a guilty conscience but there is a line that I don't cross. (Not sure where exactly that line is but I don't cross it :turned: )

Ell...i agree, recent events can and WILL influence the decisions u make during a game. Rusty...well, its either u playing the game or your alter-ego. I mean ..."My characters will sometimes be randy little polygamists that have sex with multiple partners and engage in mini-orgies, sometimes they will be monagamistic and occasionally will not engage in romance at all"... means what? That pretty much covers it all.Is that what you wouldn't want to be or what you aspire to be?Let's forget about experimentation ppl. It's either this or that .That was the point of the topic.Either u play according to your beliefs...or u role play...which means u play as anything...

So you literally role play.

I can never quite understand how or even why people do that. Do you consciously and deliberately make the opposite decision on things that you would normally take, or do you play how you perceive that type of person would behave and the choices they make?

Part of the reason I think I enjoy RPGs like Dragon Age ie. magic, potions and swords (not guns) etc and don't play any other type, is because it's as far removed from reality as I can get, I don't feel any need to play out of character.

The only thing I miss in DAO is not being able to kill anyone I choose to, on a really bad day when playing other games where this option is available, I have been know to slaughter people on a grand scale just for the hell of it, but confess I don't actually save at those times, just vent my anger and let it go at that, when the anger has passed I feel awful about what I did.

If you're asking me personally , yes i literally role play...Why do ppl do that? Why do actors ACT?Why do philosophers speculate? It can't be another way .I'm a female yet i sometimes play as a male... Some males play as females...That's why it's called role play... You pick your role and you ACT...I think.

Good point about actors, I hadn't considered that, but you don't get many male actors playing female roles and vice versa and there are some awful actors/actresses, as long as people enjoy the games it doesn't really matter if you change character or not.

Either u play according to your beliefs...or u role play...

But I do both and quite often in the same game  The romance is usually role play as are some decisions. For the decisions that count I usually go with my beliefs.

RB sums up my usual style as well.

Even if I start a new character with every interntion of "playing differently", when I get to some of the "Are you a Good Witch, or a Bad Witch?" plot points (sorry... US movie reference) I just can't let my character play the Bad Witch. It "feels" so wrong. Guess I'd make a terrible actor, huh?

it never seems to fail, that I end up making choices in game as i would in life. I tell myself this time I will be evil and kill the elves , But I just never seem to do it. I intend to be cruel in sentences etc but in the end [ for example Fable, i end up with a halo!!!!] this having been said the ironic thing is , that in real life I can be quite a scrapper at times, but usually only in protection of my loved ones, or someone whom i percieve as unable to defend themselves/

So while I hate ending up a goodie-two-shoes, I usually am :(
