Sudden low FPS and forever loading

Nvidia 8800 GTS

4GB Ram

3.2Ghz Core 2 Duo

Windows 7 64 bit

I got about 30 hours into the game with zero problems. Then, one day the game is unplayable.

I load a saved game. It loads just fine. When it loads, I get 1-5 frames per second on all resolutions and graphic settings and doesn't matter if I'm on the strip with many NPCs or alone in a room.

In addition, when I quick travel, the game loads forever. The roulette wheel sticks, taking about 3 minutes to make a complete rotation on the loading screen. I've let it load for about 15 minutes before I had to close it via the task manager. If I try and quit the game by pressing ESC, it hangs forever.

This problem occurs on all saved games. When I create a new game, it runs great until Doc Mitchell gives me the Pipboy, then it starts. I leave his house and it never loads.

Solutions I've tried that failed

1) d3d9 fix

2) Reinstall

3) Reinstall and also deleting the settings/saved games

*edit* 4) Updated graphic drivers

*edit* 5) Deleted all saved games except for the most current one. It's about 4200kb in size. Apparently there are problems if the file size becomes > 5mb

I spent all night asking Google to find a forum with this same problem, but I can't find anything.

Any ideas?

I get that kind of fps at times when I exit a building, especially with a companion, but after a save, exit to desktop, and restart, things work all right. I'm sorry to hear about your problem. I'd love to know how to fix what is happening to you, too (plus I'd like to know why the game bogs down for me, too). Cheers and good luck!

Settings make no difference. Before, I everything was set to high and I was using 1680x1050 resolution. Even if I use the lowest resolution with the minimal settings, there is no difference.

I'm leaning towards thinking it has something to do with the size of the saved game file. I saw that with this game engine, large saved game files can cause issues like this, but people were reporting problems with saved games larger than 7mb. Mine are only 4.5mb.

Do you ever overwrite save games?

Try loading that big save game, then put everything you have in your inventory into a container in the game. Then press ESC an save, create new save. Tell us what size the save game is compared to that huge save yer talking about.

Seems to be irrelevant now... I just reinstalled and deleted all my saved games (backing them up first). I created a new game, and everything was great up until Doc Mitchell handed me the Pipboy... slideshow. I left the house and had to close the game using the task manager after 4-5 minutes of loading.

I guess the only option now is to do a format and reinstallation of Windows, because I'm completely lost.

Well try the steam troubleshooting page

It actually has links to stuff like the 2008 copy of Visual C++ for both 32 bit an 64 bit, also there's a troubleshooting guide just for vista an win7.

They said they're working on the 3 big issues we are having for the next patch, Nvidia low performance, corupting save games, an havok problems.
