What just happend? Major problem!

I went to start FO3 and it crashed. Not normal crash to desktop. Just a blank screen. There was no response from my computer or anything. I held down the power button to restart. Restarting normally causes it to happen again after about 2 seconds after booting Windows. I can only boot in safe mode.

What's wrong and how do I fix it?

It appears to be fixed, running windows normally but now I'm afraid to start the game again.

It worked. Then I turned it off to check a FAQ. When I went to turn it on again it happend again. This time it got back to normal Windows much easier.

Upon trying to start my computer today the same thing happend. I uninstalled the game and it's still happening. Finally got it to normal windows after an hour.

Have you overclocked your system?. This is usually caused by overclocking memory. Try unplug memory from mainboard then reinstall again. Don't forget resetting your BIOS to default settings maybe can fix it. It's suggested upgrading your BIOS system too.

No I haven't. Haven't done anything to it at all or added anything to the physical computer.

Everything was running on ultra high so didn't need to and wouldn't mess with that stuff anyway. Not the best with tools etc. especially dealing with small parts.

This occured with Vegas (once I finally got the right archive fix),Oblivion and Dracula Origin so it's not a Fallout specific problem I guess. Thought it might've been Steam related somehow but NBA 2K11 worked. Also I just got this computer in September so nothing should need upgrading.

It seems hitting ctrl + alt+ delete while the welcome screen is on helps it start up but not every time.

can you posts your hardware specs and your OS too?...

If you are sure that is not your hardware problem but you should upgrade if necessary maybe your hardware vendors provide new patch or something that can improve your system.

I tried updating the videocard drivers and that somehow ruined my hard drive which was replaced. Now soon as I went to play New Vegas it's happend again. It'll get to the desktop, the screen shakes and flickers then gets all fuzzy then resets. Runs in safe mode at 800x680 or whatever it is. Attempt to change resolution resulted in another restart. Must be a videocard problem? It's an i7 920,ATI 5870,6 gigs of RAM and Windows 7 (64 bit).

as you said you are safe while in 'safe mode'. maybe you can try these : 1. check your power supply first(not assume you need more power) maybe some cables not connected to vga ;) 2. uninstall your graphics card driver. then try load OS with no vga driver installed..3. but if you're sure the problem not hardware related try run some benchmark tools, 3Dmark, PCMark or anything else like that...

Your graphic card need max. 188W in power , when running in 'safe mode' your OS doesn't load the graphic card driver..

Well I'm sure it IS hardware related now. Just not because of something I did. It's under warranty and all that so it'll be replaced. It's working fine for now other than shaking when turning it on and going to the desktop or leaving the desktop while shutting down.

Those tests would point out a problem if there is one?

No. that's only my trick when i got new PC or do overclocking to test stability on PC..

I would suggest might be best you ask to your vendor first, as your PC still under warranty.

This sounds like a power supply problem. Most standard off the shelf computers are shipped with the lowest power supply rating they can get away with. The cheaper systems are likely the worst offenders. But Dell, HP and other name brands are not much better. Changing anything - especially adding a better video card will put these power supplies over their capability.

Then, running games like Fallout3 and Oblivion will tax your video card to its limits - which causes it to require more power - again going over the capability of the stock power supply.

Also, cheap or no-name power supplies are notorious for outright lying about how much power they are able to supply. The power supply is the life blood of your computer - get a name brand supply, and be sure to read up on any customer reviews on any supply you are considering. A weak supply can cause other components to fail as well, especially Hard drives and motherboards as well as the Video cards.
