Tommygunner
I've seen several tutorials both here and on the web regarding the relative ease of converting mods - namely armor - from one game to the other. However, it's been quite a while since I've played FO3 and I can't find my CD. Is there ANY way at all to convert the mods without the original game on file? Is there ANY way to get FO3 GECK to work without the original game since I apparently need it? Also, as far as I know, this doesn't count as piracy from the original game since even if I didn't already own it, the original content is not what I'm wanting - just the mods. I only bring that up to answer a potential question I think might come up in this thread. This is also something I'm doing for personal use - not distribution - since I just found out that you can put armor on other characters. From what I could findb this specific question hasn't been asked before, but if so, just point me in the right direction. Thanks, Tommygun
Tommygunner
Let me also add that if this is not possible, a simple response thereof from an experienced member would end the suspense for me. In the meantime, I will continue to look for a solution and post an answer here if I can find one. Thanks, Tommygun
rickerhk
You need the CD. The Geck requires the game to be installed. The FO3 mods require the data files from it in order to load, using FO3Edit, in order to be able to rename the master to the NV version as a first step in porting the mod. Tommygunner
Makes sense. Thank you for the response. I almost thought I was having success with text editing the esp file and changing the master section. But no success because it wouldn't load in GECK and FO3Edit requires assess to the FO3 registry key to load.

Just edit the MAST record to be FalloutNV.esm instead of Fallout3.esm. I did just that to start converting my own mods, though the CD is right next to me. Tommygunner
THANK YOU!!! I wanted to test it before I responded and after some finagling I got it to work with the newer FNVedit. Great solution for people who can't (or don't want to) install the first game just to convert a mod for use with the second. I've got this cool power armor on Papa Khan now. Always felt he deserved a little better as the leader.
