BloodyShinta
Well here is the issue. I'm currently using QTP3, Better Tiling, Qarl lod normal 4096 ,BTQ4096, Klondor's lod noise replacer medium. In some places i get really nice looking landscapes, like this: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs076.ash2/37134_456437926820_550051820_6050263_5534363_n.jpg but simply turning around reveals horrible looking landscapes like this: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs470.ash2/74295_456437431820_550051820_6050262_7184478_n.jpg how do i get oblivion to look detailed and not pixilated? Smooth613
I don't see a problem. That looks perfectly normal for the configuration you described. There are tons of other LOD packages if you want a different flavor. I suggest you just browse and find one you like. You can also mix and match them to get a custom result. I currently have a BAIN package with about 20 different LOD packages and it's customizable in any way within minutes. The trick is finding the right normal maps with proper distant LODs that fit your tastes.
BloodyShinta
ok, thats kind of what i was afraid of. I went back and looked at the TOTO again and realized I hand't paid close enough attention to different options it provided, i just looked at the furthest to the right and assumed that bigger # equaled better results. Judging from those preview screens it would seem that Qarls normal map 2048 with BT color map 4096 produces the best overall result. going to go test it now. BloodyShinta
I went ahead and replaced the BT 2048 with 4096 first, and saw a dramatic increase in the detail of my distant LODs, yay! but then i realized my distant Lods were already pretty good, so i just improved upon something that wasn't the cause for concern in the first place, boo. the results of that:http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs465.ash2/73797_456899246820_550051820_6054415_2233091_n.jpg The distant roads look fantastic, very clear and a lot of detail has also been added to the terrain. However, the closer/midrange area still looks horrid, and there is also a werid problem of the midrange mesh not meeting correctly with the close range mesh, creating a wall that disappears when you get close enough. To further illustrate this lack of change in the mid range textures, here is the same area after installing BT 4096 that originally caught my eye and made me go back to the drawing board: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1156.snc4/149799_456902471820_550051820_6054455_5251546_n.jpg
BloodyShinta
Ok, update. I went ahead and put the Qarl Normal maps down to 2046 and saw some improvement. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs988.snc4/76142_456910001820_550051820_6054492_4015430_n.jpg The midrange landscape is less pixilated, and less jarring to the eye. there was some loss of quality in the distant mountains, but the difference is heavily improved on the midrange so the trade off pays for itself and then some. the problem with the meshes not meeting up correctly still persists however, as evidenced here: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs462.ash2/73537_456908631820_550051820_6054488_4995814_n.jpg I am not quite sure what to do about this. I did use optimized landmax 50%, I'm not sure if this the reason why, but if anyone has any insight into what causes, and how to fix this, i would be glad to hear it. Also, while the mid ranged textures are improved, i still don't feel like they measure up compared to the distant and the close range textures, does anyone know what the best replaces for midrange textures are? Smooth613
The problem you show with mismatched land is something I have yet to fully remedy. I still have occasions of this, although it's very rare.
BloodyShinta
hmm, i see it quite often. my best guess is that the vanilla oblivion midrange meshes are drastically different than the close range ones. So i guess someone could create a mod which individually snapped every mesh together correctly... anyone have a couple years on your hands? I got things to be generally how i like em for the moment. I still have to tinker with the roughly 10-15 mods associated with the Oblivion Graphics Extender v2 that you showed me smooth. I went ahead and put open cities on, and i must say its a cool, yet taxing, effect. Quick question... im starting to feel like replacing Qarls normal maps also messed with the close range textures. I don't have a reference photo which kinda makes me feel stupid for not taking one earlier, but this problem wasn't really something i had foreseen. up close, rocks look like this right now: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs264.snc4/39522_457632341820_550051820_6060022_5695644_n.jpg the top and bottom of the rock don't even match! the closer you get the more distorted it looks too. I seem to remember Qarls stuff holding up even when you get right into it.
Smooth613
I've tried Qarl's in the past and I like it to an extent, it's highly detailed. But for me it's overdone, it's too much. I like the vanilla textures so I just use Bomret's Detailed Normal Maps and his SI Pack. Also the Normals for Higher Res Landscape. I also have tons of other small replacer packs that I mix and match over top of Bomret's. Basically I use Bomret's Normals as a base and put a handful of smaller replacers, like Koldorn's and Ampolx's, over it. Then I use a bunch of the Improved X mods. Improved Trees and Flora, Signs, Fruits and Veg, etc... Then I use some of the custom textures from THIS set. Then there's Better Wine, Better Potion, Better Gold, Silverware, etc.. etc... It's taken a long time to find what I really like best but in the end it works for me. I have a handful of very elaborate BAIN packages with all of these textures in them so I can swap between them at the drop of a dime. It's, BAIN, is really the only way, for me at least, to install Texture packs. It makes it so simple to mix and match and removal is a breeze if you want to swap em around. Sorry I didn't provide links for everything but it would have taken more time than I currently have. I gave pretty accurate names though so just search those. Or just search the word "Improved" or "Better" and start looking. That's how I found all this stuff. From there it's just finding what fits your personal tastes. Good luck. EDIT** I forgot to mention Xerus, CorePC, and Dev_Akm's packs. They have some great textures. CorePC has tons of stuff, it's called CorePC' Vibrant textures I believe. I also use Diverse Grass and there are LOD packs for that too. And Brumbek's Really Better Tiling Grass, well anything by Brumbek that I can find. His work is top notch. EDIT 2** I decided I could just post my BAIN packages to list some other mods I use, might be easier for you to spot a few things. Just keep in mind some packages are very complex and have multiple mods incorporated in them. LOD and Noise package along with Custom Roads, Rocks, and More are a couple gigs of stuff for just those two packages. Same applies to my Sound, Replacer, and UI sections. A couple of those are complex packages with tons of information. There are a few I'm still creating a good structure for a BAIN archive. Also some of this is kinda deceiving since some of those packages may contain multiple mods. For Example, the following is the LOD Pack. When installing there are check boxes beside each folder. You choose only one from each numbered folder. Folders of the same number contain conflicting files. The numbered system works as a heirarchy too, just like a Load Order. The last overrides the first. So if you do slip up and select multiple from the same number it's no big deal really, only the last selected loads. BloodyShinta
well, thats quite a list. I so far have opted to go for some of the more all inclusive packages, but i do get a good deal of enjoyment out of testing out things and comparing differences on a small scale basis, It's just a matter of having the time. I just started a new job so I'm not gonna be able to dedicated the amount of time i did over the last few weeks, but i made a lot of progress and thanks to your help i can use Bash pretty well now. Ive got two quick questions for you though. Does Bash keep a backup of the vanilla files so that if you uninstall the textures for lets say, a weapons pack that had overridden the vanilla textures, it would reinstall the vanilla textures and not cause the game to crash? i haven't been to eager to test this theory out for fear of breaking s***. also, with all the work you've put into your modding i would love to see a picture of what your game looks like, do you have any pictures you are particularly proud of?
