Echo3
Hello. I've been trying for two days to get my Oblivion game back up and running after reinstalling it to C:\Games\Oblivion, but it refuses to work. I'm completely out of ideas as to how to fix it, so any help would much appreciated. What I am using:HP G61 Notebook PCWindows 7 Home Premium64 bitOblivion GOTY editionWindows FirewallAvira AntiVir Personal Sequence of events: 1. I received the game as a Christmas gift last year from my brother, and I installed it into the default directory not knowing that he planned to add mods to it for me (or that UAC is such a pain). Mods were added a few months later with the game still in the default directory. He mentioned that I would most likely need reinstall Oblivion in another location if I wanted to continue playing the game with mods (the mod installation at that time was just a thing for me to try them out). 2. Mods are fantastic! I continued playing the game as it was until the day it refused to load correctly. Since I am not an expert with this stuff, I assume the problem was something to do with the UAC. I tried every suggestion I could find online to get it to run, but I only had success one time (with right click>>run as admin). I decided to go ahead and uninstall/reinstall to C:\Games\Oblivion so I could add more mods and hopefully avoid future issues. 3. Uninstalled the game, but left the stuff like the OBMM, ect. (since we were going to add the mods back after the game was moved). Naturally, lots of problems trying to install the game after that. After many hours and a ton of frustration, I finally just deleted everything on my laptop that was related to Oblivion. I also used the registry cleaner as suggested by Bben (but I only removed reg entries that I could tell were Oblivion related...registry cleaners scare me). Still, when I put the game cd in to install it, the game's start menu came up. Since it seemed my laptop thought Oblivion was still installed, I clicked uninstall again using the cd, got error code 5001. OK. I then >> right click on the drive the cd was in, explored, and clicked setup.exe. Once the game was installed again, I was able to uninstall it correctly via the cd. After removing the game for the second time, I went through every step again (reg cleaner, ScanDisk, defrag, Disk Cleanup, deleted save game folder, etc) to be sure Oblivion, mods, and utilities were completely off my system. That did the trick because I was able to finally install the game to C:\Games\Oblivion with no problem, using the cd. 4. Thought for sure I was finally going to be able to play the game since since the last installation seemed to work perfectly and seemed to be clean, but no. When I try to load the game, doesn't matter if it's via the desktop shortcut or by putting the cd into the drive, the game's start menu pops up (and the music plays), but when I click "play" all that happens is the small black window appears briefly at the top left of my screen, and the start menu disappears. The game seems to be running (?) because Oblivion.exe is listed in the Task Manager processes. 5. I disabled the UAC before installing the game this last time, and since the game is now in C:\Games\Oblivion, I don't know why it is only showing up in the Task Manager. I'm wondering if the problem is still the UAC somehow? This is exactly the issue I was experiencing when the game was located in the default directory, where it shows up in the Task Manager, but nowhere else. Anyway, I tried disabling the firewall, running the compatibility thing, setting the exes in the Oblivion folder to run as admin, and all other five-hundred flaming hoops, nothing works. 6. Out of ideas, and I'm an inch away from beating my laptop to death with a hammer... :wallbash:
Smooth613
Well I'm not sure how you ran the game before or did you run it on a different PC? According to my Google searches your Laptop has an unsupported video chipset; Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M. This will not run Oblivion and if you get lucky and it does run it's going to be horrible. I did find one model of your laptop that had an ATI RADEON 3200 but again, that's not good enough either. Do me a favor and post a DXDIAG so I can be certain of your video hardware. Post a dxdiag.XP: Go to Start->run, type “dxdiag” and hit enter. Click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post. VISTA/Windows 7: Go to Start->Search, type “dxdiag” and hit enter, click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post.
Jagermh
Last time I reinstalled Oblivion mine didnt start up either, turns out i forgot to delete the .ini files etc. in the...\my documents\mygames\oblivion folder and it was not working because I had previously installed DarNified UI which edits the .ini files. But you say you've deleted everything! So Im not sure unless you forgot that too. You could try installing it on another computer to rule out a disk problem You should have oblivion installed to C:\program files\bethesda softworks\
Echo3
Thanks for your response and time. No, the same laptop, and it ran just fine before the mods were added (and for months after mods were added). Everything looked great to me, but I'm not an experienced gamer. However, my brother, who built his own PC so he could have the best hardware and whatnot for Oblivion, Fallout, etc, remarked that he was surprised by how good Oblivion looked and played on my laptop. ------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 11/14/2010, 03:01:51 Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.100618-1621) Language: English (Regional Setting: English)System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard System Model: HP G61 Notebook PC BIOS: Default System BIOS Processor: AMD Sempron™ M100, ~2.0GHz Memory: 3072MB RAMAvailable OS Memory: 2812MB RAM Page File: 1190MB used, 4431MB available Windows Dir: C:\Windows DirectX Version: DirectX 11DX Setup Parameters: Not found User DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent) System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent) DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled DxDiag Version: 6.01.7600.16385 32bit Unicode ------------DxDiag Notes------------ Display Tab 1: No problems found. Smooth613
You could try installing it on another computer to rule out a disk problem You should have oblivion installed to C:\program files\bethesda softworks\ While your first bit of advice is solid, and indeed should be deleted, referring to deleting the Oblivion.ini. Your second bit of advice is just plain wrong. You should not install Oblivion to the default directory, or anywhere in Program Files, on Vista or Windows 7 due to UAC. OP please ignore the above. OP is correct in installing the game to C:\Games\Oblivion for Windows 7.
Echo3
Jagermh, I did have Darnified, but I deleted the Oblivion folder you mentioned. Everything I have read says Oblivion should be installed to C:\Games\Oblivion if someone using Windows 7 wants to avoid problems. But like I said, I'm nowhere near an expert...just trying to follow the advice I find online. One of the sources I used: http://www.tesnexus....icle.php?id=240 NOTE: If you are using Vista or Win7, DO NOT install to the default directory. Instead make a new directory I recommend C:\Games\Oblivion. Install Oblivion there to avoid the hassle with Vista UAC blocking mods. This is not a problem on WinXP so if you want to you can install to the default location. Or use the C:\Games\Oblivion. I appreciate your help, though. Smooth613
Okay you should indeed be able to run Oblivion at moderate settings and even add a handful of mods. You'll just have to be careful and not go crazy with mods or add really taxing mods like Hi-Res Texture Packs, Better Cities, or other major Overhauls. Now lets get back to the original problem then, since your Laptop should indeed run the game. Try, as mentioned a few minutes ago in the previous 2 posts, to delete your Oblivion.ini from your My Documents\My Games\Oblivion folder. There you'll find Oblivion.ini. Delete that and try to start the game. If the game starts then awesome! That was likely the problem from the previous install, left over, lingering, information. If that doesn't work I suggest you follow the next two guides I'm gonna link you to. Follow them in the order posted. Bben's Revert to Vanilla Bben's Install Procedure Report back with results after each and we'll go from there. Good luck!
Echo3
Wow, and I really wanted Better Cities! :( OK, I'll make sure I've deleted Oblivion.ini from My Documents\My Games\Oblivion folder. If it still doesn't work, I'll get back to you when I have the results from Revert to Vanilla. Again, thank you.
Jagermh
Yeah, soz for the UAC thing I dont have to put up with that since I dont have Vista / 7 (haven't actualy used it for much more than a few hours, I avoid it like the plague since its more detrimental to gaming than a serious boot sector virus since it is stored there anyway)and probably never will since they're so irritating but if you want things to actualy work on XP then you should put them in the correct place. In the end you're just going to tear your hair out with frustration and reinstall XP so do yourself a favour and do it now. If you post anthing that can be measured in km or miles then you can place it in the [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler ] tags to make it collapsable
