Legion more... Legion?

They call themselves Legion. They roughly model their tactics after the Roman Army, and the mass-formation concept could almost be considered Phalanx.

 

So...

 

Shields. Melee spears. formations. that sort of thing.

Well, the early kingdom and late empire legions did use spears, but for most of the western roman history actually they used a gladius. It was kinda even funny that pre-Marian troops were called Hastati (spearmen) for historical reasons but actually had a short sword :P

 

Only the Triarii had kept their spears, but even those got dropped in the Marian reforms.

 

I.e., if Caesar's Legion is actually modelled after, you know, Caesar's legions, they'd have javelins and gladius.

 

That said, keep an eye on CaesarInvictus's mod, he was doing just that kind of making the Legion more historical.

 

That said, I was considering making a spear based on the Holy Lance in the Vienna museum too, except with a blade that never was snapped and doesn't need that metal band in the middle to hold it together. I figured if that spear model was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for some wastelanders too ;) But bear in mind that with the game's animations, it will handle like a glaive actually.

Though, bear in mind this is many, many years into the future, so the Legion wouldn't be historically accurate anyway, they'd only have a vague idea of certain customs, rituals and weapons. I mean, it's possible they could get hold of some texts and such relating to the Romans - there is a book about the Mongols that exists, for instance - but the Kings barely know anything about Elvis, as The King says in one conversation. Still, it'd be interesting if nothing else :)

Well, if you talk to woosname, the guy in the old mormon fort about Caesar, he knew Caesar before he took that name. The guy was apparently quite fascinated by the history of the Roman Empire, and even went as far as to make his troops speak Latin.

 

Basically I guess there's room to go either way. He could be just a guy who gave his soldiers red uniforms, as the game makes him, or he could be genuinely obsessed and do more genuine weapons and armour. What you learn about him does allow for the latter extreme too.
